Default Crank pully problems.

So with your guy's direction I replaced my water pump, idler pully and timing belt this weekend but I ran in to a problem and thought I would ask what other did.

when it came time to remove the crank pully to get the plastic timing belt cover off, I couldnt get it to move. I even got out my big 3/4" gun and hit it but couldnt get the bolt to budge. (never had anythign that it couldnt break free)

I ended up cutting the ------- plastic cover off with tin snips and a screw driver so we could get inside to work on the stuff.

anyone ever have this same issue? what did you do to fix it

usually the impact will get it... ive never had one on that tight. You try a BFH? or a breaker bar with a bolt breaker on it (jack handle)?

I didnt cause we had it set to TDC and using a breaker bar would move the crank.

my big gun is huge, 3/4 inch with a 5 lb hammer in it. It was the only way i could get my flywheel off the RX-7 and we used a 8 foot pole and lifted the car before we tried that so i know its got power.

what size is that nut, i forget its like a 53 right? you could have just loosened the crank nut then moved it back to tdc, if you were worryied about the pistons flying into the valves just loosen up the cam enough for the valves to come up

Naw its only a 19mm. I would have brought out the long arm to torque it off but it would have just turned over the engine with that much torque anyway. The gun was the only way i could think to get to off without problems and it didnt work.

I just figured others had had the same problem. seems like thats not true.

I have had this problem a couple of times. Beau hit it the last time and told me to heat it with a torch, then impact it off. Worked perfectly!

Thanks again Beau!

BTW, Don't torch it till it glows, just get it good and hot...

Yeah I thought about heating it but really didnt want to burn out a seal. Good to know I can hit it just a little with the MAP gas then get it off.
thanks!

Use a neumatic hammer. I just did my water pump last week, I took the car to minieke (they broke a 1/2" impact extension on it and couln't get it off) took it to another place that couldn't get it off and finally took it to a shop that used a impact hammer on one side of it and it came right off, have to get another bolt beforehand though.
