GSXR 600 motor, used for our Formula SAE racing competition. 4 EGT sensors, 5 lambdas :D They have used a turbo one year in the past, but said it didn't give much of a gain the way they did it. My goal is to get enough research done so we will have a forced induction machine for next year's competition >:D Garrett sponsors us and sends us free turbos, and we just got a GT15. It's a cute little turbo. I have a lot of work to do before it actually gets put on the car, if that even happens.

The main thing holding us back from making serious horsepower is that we are limited to a 60mm restrictor in the intake.

wow i looked at that pic and got really confused. thats pretty damn cool, what school do you go to. and where is it. that ---- looks like something that would be fun to take.

Yea sorry about my shitty camera phone pics (as always). I go to UW-Madison for mechanical engineering. This is the most fun part of school, I could seriously work in the shop for hours and hours.

i got a couple of friends who go to UTI in houston. $26,000 for a complete degree is ass raping though. if i had the shop and tools and sponsers for that stuff i would be a happy man.

Re: Couple pics of a project I'm working on at school

---- UTI. I mean they are a great school but that is way too much money. Get an engineering degree for less than that and make a lot more money straight outta school.

We also picked up sponsorship from AEM, they are helping us with the intake runners. And dozen or so other companies I can't think of the name of. We get lots of free ----. We just had a place micropolish a ---- ton of parts, including valves, gears, and more.

I'm going to be in my school's FSAE competition next year and talking to some of the guys - that is the gayest rule.
I'll check the rule book and see if we can innovate something around that rule for next year.

i know what you mean. and people still go even though its overrated as hell. there hotrod class is bad ass though. im just going to go get ase certified and maybe take a couple of mechanics courses and start at a shop.

There has to be some limiting factor in the engine. or else some one at a rich school would run a atop fuuel motor. Making the limitation a restrictor makes it more intersting than making it a cubic inch restriction. the key is the place ment and dsign of the intake and runners. CFD programs canhelp with that. they only cost like 20 grand

I disagree. By limiting the intake size instead of combustion chamber size, they tell you that they dont want you to innovate much in the engines. I don't know much about intake manifolds, but super tuned runners will give you, what a 10hp gain? Not enough to exactly destroy the competition.

The intake restriction forces car designers to make their cars weigh less and handle better instead of make more power. Kinda lame IMO.

Heh, 10 hp will destroy the competition. This competition is not just about power, it's about an all around racecar, compare it to a miniature F1. They don't just focus on power. Weight and handling are extremely huge factors as well. One of the reasons lots of the team members don't like the turbo is because of the weight it adds (~20-25 lbs for the system) compared to the torque gains and improved HP curve. I aim to disprove them next year and show them a turbo is the way to go. I am currently basing this on my love for turbos, turbofreakiness if you will, so I don't know what will happen. I could do dozens of hours of research only to scrap the project, but this whole thing is about learning (and having fun and destroying the competition, which we usually do)

Hey Jago, How much are you paying for that ME degree? I've always thought about it but have yet to pursue the idea.

just to keep ppl from worrying about lag, go twin turbo :y :y :y

any motor that rev's really high thats 600cc + needs a decently sized turbo..

BTW Tatakai I saw you going north on I5 today from MLK way, :-P

rsmith2786 02-09-2006 07:21 AM

Re: Couple pics of a project I'm working on at school

I go to uw-platteville and we have also played with the idea of a turbo many times. With the 60mm restrictor a small turbo is your only option even though it revs high it doesnt flow much air. The problem is that you get a huge pressure drop right after the restrictor and it looses tons of efficiency. The ammount of psi you need at the turbo is many times higher than the ammount of psi you will see after the restrictor. When we did our calculations we couldnt reasonably flow enough air to make the extra weight worth it. BTW we run a 600cc CBR motor.

Also isnt the restrictor actually like 22mm not 60mm? Hell, i can never remember.

jago.... does your team compete against cornell? i have a friend who is on their team..... apperently they have won the past five years in a row. they just finished fabricating their chassis and have the motor installed and running.

The cure to all your competetive needs... Its like the bottel experiment.. where you creat a cyclone to get the water into the other bottel quicker :1

Re: Couple pics of a project I'm working on at school

Yes it is a 60 mm restrictor. 20 mm would choke the hell out of that motor!

Yea we compete against countries from around the world. There are ~120 teams from the US and other countries and we almost always place in the top 5.

Last I heard it was 22mm. They werent making more than 60hp.

The old car, CHECK this out:
http://dot.etec.wwu.edu/fsae/viking30.htm
"The V8 engine and 6-speed transmission on Viking XXX are two items that make this car stand out. The engine block, crankshaft, connecting rods, and transmission case were designed and manufactured at the VRI by the FSAE team. The engine block was CNC machined out of aluminum. The heads were taken from a Kawasaki 250cc 4-stroke motorcycle engine that made peak power at 19,500 RPM. The 6-speed transmission case was machined in house out of aluminum, and features internals borrowed from a Honda 600cc F1 motorcycle. The transmission and engine are fully stressed members of the chassis and feature mounting points for the suspension."

I was hoping to be in WWU's VRI program this spring, but it will not be until summer or fall.

hey i'm doing Mechanical Engineering in Georgia. 2nd semester at Clayton State and then transferring to tech. Actually I'm majoring in physics(masters), then going back and getting the other classes i need for mech. eng. degree. I got about 5.25 years to go, but it'll be nice when I'm done.

There is no horsepower limit, we make approx 80 hp with the restrictor (I may have been wrong about the size on that)

Here's a few pics

I suck at resizing images, check a couple posts down

There ain't a damn thing wrong with that. I went to UW for 2 years straight outta high school, dropped out, went to a local tech school, got a ------- ACCOUNTIJNG degree (Who the ---- wants to be an accountant?) so I decided to go back to my true passion which would be this ----.

If I would have done what you are doing, I probably would have saved $7000-8000. Oh well, live n learn right? ;)

Yeah I went to UTI in Glendale Heights, IL and it was like 20k for the year. Then additional for the ford FACT program or I guess there's a new Toyota program. It's really an ass raping. I spent everything I had saved up during high school to just get started up there with an apartment, and food.. then by the time i was settled in I got my first 800.00 school bill. I made perfect grades up there and then after 3 months I broke my foot working at menards (workmans comp ;) ) and that was a sign to get home and find a job. Carpenter now, pretty good jack.. 15/hour plus full benifiets and consistent work through the winters.

I wish I was a ME student, but I doubt I could afford it. And with the grades I have now I'd have to bust my ass for a couple more semesters to get accepted by a school. Sick work.
