so you did replace all the plugs and the wires?
or did you take one plug out and figured they were all good?
im still saying its electrical/ignition in nature. pull all the wires out and check to see if there is any water down the spark plug tubes. my tercel would do that when the holes got filled with water

I replaced plugs, then put my old ones back in since it didn't make much of a difference. The tubes are dry as a bone. Brand new wires/cap/rotor
on a side note, i have never seen my cooling fan kick on but temps never go above mid.

Pull the cap and hose it with WD. Couldn't hurt. Spray the wires too. Could be a spec of moisture in there that evaporates when hot, and the air will ionize when moist, causing the spark to jump to ground. Do you get any kind of backfire? Try testing the coolant sensor with a meter. See what you get at cold vs. hot and check it against spec. Autozone can sometimes tell you the specs over the phone, or a service manual will.

No backfires.
one more thing: the o2 sensor wire was damaged so i spliced it and reconnected (without soldering). There are 2 wires coming from the harness to the sensor but only one on the sensor. Is the second one isolated ground?

It must be a shield wire but it is cut/chewed off 10" before the sensor and doesn't seem to belong there.

So it's a 1 wire sensor? Put a meter on it and see what it reads when warmed up. If it's showing a short to ground, or an open, dud. See what you get. Will cost you 0 dollars. I used to have a Toyota Electrical service manual before Katrina. It outlined how to properly test every sensor Toyota ever used through 95.

o2 sensor reads:
cold: .00-.47 v
warm: .10-.58
and it constantly fluctuates
