Re:Computers Suck!

the funny thing is that all our computers arnt on-site we have about 15 computers offsite in sets of 5 at various places in the united states. i just havent gotten any calls from the other sites, "yet" because we havent messed with even checking them "yet" so we'll see tomarrow how much more ---- we are going to have problems with. on a side note i cant wiat for SP2 for XP

onyx or anyone else u work with microsoft server 2003 yet? wonder if more secure and worth the money to get out of 2000 server/

Re:Computers Suck!

i have 2003 server..

its not necessary. norton for servers is the way to go.

put it onto the server, and all the clients get scanned for viruses.

also, i would recommend getting vnc.
its a remote desktop tool, thats java compatible and you can acces a destop with almost any computer with an internet connection. no downloading software. just a java applet. highly recommended.

Re:Computers Suck!

yeah we are using mcafee antivirus and epolicy orcastrator to administer it to all the computers on the network they did great it was the server that the worm hit and the virus program showed it was on the computer it just never did anything with it. yeah we use vnc for our servers and off-site computers the others we just kick the user off. has anyone messed with SUS we just started using it

Re:Computers Suck!

Careful with SP2 for XP....i read on MSDN (i think, can't remember exactly) that some apps will stop working after the patch. this ought to be fun when the my clients in idaho falls, Florida, and california call me up saying their shipment tracking software doesn't work anymore :-X....

Re:Computers Suck!

wow... seems like we got a lot of network admins on this site. just out of curiousity, how is the job market in your area? out here(vegas) it sucks. im thinking about moving to another city cuz im sick of all the bullshit here. just wondering how the pay/cost of living/need for admins is in other places. i would just look up the stuff online but i would like to hear it from actual people.

yeah vnc is the pimp ----...but it lags - but then again thats just how remote desktops are. It beats sneakernet, plus its free. :D

LINUX!!!!

heh i learned my lesson a while back, i only use windows to play some games. if its for business, there are ways to run msoffice or even a few very nice open sourse office suites.

Re:Computers Suck!

yeah i hear u on the linux but i dont know enough about it and it would have to shine just as much if not more than microsoft stuff for the employees or they will bitch that they have to go into a different menu to change a excel feature. does MS Office run on Linux machines ive worked with Open Office.org on a windows machine which i know u can get for linux machines but it was horriblely incompatable with MS Office XP. also we spent $40,000 on custom designed software to sync our remote sites with our home office so i need to do more research but Linux seems the way to go ive been playing with Knoppix Linux on my home computer since it runs off the CDROM and doesnt need to install.

Central Florida I dont know how the market is. I got my job from my buddys dad that runs a Construction firm that does jobs from $5mil-$50mil and they needed help so he gave me a job paying me a whole $10/hr untilling i get the hang of things then $12/hr but he is also rembursing me for my college upon completion of my classes aslong as i get an A or B so i guess in my situation iam doing ok money wise.

I am messing around with Knoppix too, although i have no idea what the hell i am doing. I am running it on a POS computer i pieced together with no HD so I dont care if i screw anything up.

Where do you go for info on LINUX? tomshardware.com?

If you're looking for an LAN admin. job in NYC area don't bother. The pay sucks and the cost of living is way too high. I am only making ~39k/yr with benefits, etc.

Re:Computers Suck!

knoppix 3.3 is the pimp ----. i liked it so much i almost decided to install to my hard drive. if you like knoppix, try knoppix std(security tools distro)... it has ALOT of cool ---- for us networking guys if you know how to use it. end users should NOT use linux. they are a bunch of ------- idiots who cant use windows - which ANY dumb mutherfucker SHOULD be able to use. why give yourself a headache by giving them something more complex/different? just use linux as a server, or for your own personal machine. actually, if its going to be a server, i would try using freebsd. its great for being a server(boasts the longest uptimes of ANY operating system), but kind of annoying to set up for personal home use(multimedia and other fun stuff- the ports collection is kinda buggy...so youre back to dependancy hell!).

as far as where you go for info on linux, google and your local library are your best friend. go check out a bunch of linux forums and read the FAQ's. however, the best way to learn ANY os is just to use/tinker with it. actually, the learning curve from an mcse to linux/unix isn't that horrible as i was expecting. the underlying networking concepts are the same, just the environment/structure is different. running windows programs on linux with wine is just a big freakin headache, and even then the programs dont always run right. i find it easier just to dual boot and run windows on a second hard drive for those "must have" games. other than games, i have found a good substitute for all of the windows programs that i use. i would recommend mandrake or suse for linux n00bs, maybe redhat/fedora. personally i found the "hand holding" of mandrake and suse really annoying, and prefer fedora or debian(knoppix is based on debian).

yeah iam going to lock down all the computers so the users cant change anything and ---- stuff up. dumb mother fuckers install whatever random thing they find. the mother fucker with the mp3s on the server use to run kazza on his computer and all other kinda ----. his 2.4ghz dell is so damn slow because hes installed like a 100 programs that eat all his resources then bitches about it. lock down time everone is going to get a start button with MS office and thats it. they are going to learn to hate me. but i guess that is my job these are COMPANY computers not PERSONAL computers and iam GOD. anyone use "CrossOver Office" check it here seems to intergrate office xp and lower and adobe photoshop real well with Linux, cant find any bad words about it. http://www.codeweavers.com/site/prod...a80af8d2429119

anyone going to microsoft security summit?

oh yeah suse has a cdrom bootable setup also just like knoppix iam downloading it tomarrow and try it out
http://www.suse.com/us/private/download/suse_linux/ which i found out its owned by Novell now? makes u wonder, Novell coming back.

thats basically what i was doing for a while. a friend of my dads opened a consulting company. you name it, we did it, from network installs/configuring, to maintenance, to support, to lame ass pctech ----, anything computers/networking. i made really good money for over a year, but then ---- fell through. after a while there wasn't enough work to go around, and we were paid for each job, not really by the hour. i got tired of sitting around doing nothing at the office, so started working at walmart making like 1/3 what i was making but at least working full time hours. i tried looking for other jobs but the only jobs i could find either pay $10/hr(---- that), or require a bachelors, 5+ years experience, and a fuckload of certifications. i have an associates, 1 year experience and only a couple of certs.

personally i think certifications are just expensive peices of toilet paper. alot of people who have them dont know ---- and just used troytech/testkillers/braindumps/other cheating methods to pass. ive worked with people who possess alot of certs, are dumb as ----, and i have to "clean up" after them. afterwards they usually take credit for what i did and i have to put them in their place. i personally could pass the mcse/ccna/novell cna/various comptia exams, but at $100-$200 each x 10-20 tests, thats alot of money. i hear that alot of companies will pay for your certs, so hopefully i can get a job at one of these companies.

hey, just a thought i have been thinking about, nothing serious just a thought i would like some feedback from other networking guys. i have been thinking about building 4 or 5 halfway descent linux/unix servers, getting a t1 and necessary network equipment, and setting up a webhosting company. i figure i can charge people x amount of $ per month to host their websites on my servers, and if i get enough clients i can make money just working at home. any thoughts/ideas/suggestions on this?

hahahah microcrap cant even see there OWN peoblems much less will it help you in sealing them. it might catch the old crap but i dont think it will help that much,

Re:Computers Suck!

why the ---- would you use microsoft ---- to test microsoft security holes? most likely its going to come back and report "you are using the most secure O/S in the universe and have nothing to worry about"

go to google. look up "nessus". its a security analyzer that runs on linux and will surprise you about how insecure windows can be if you dont lock it down. actually, just download knoppix STD(security tools distro). it has all the ---- you need, its free, and will most likely rape the ---- out of "microsoft baseline security analyzer."

PureCRXtasy 03-27-2004 10:06 PM

Re:Computers Suck!

The MS Security analyzer is actually pretty decent for what it is. I scripted it to run on all of my workstations and it gives me a decent picture of where any possible issues might arise. Nessus looks cool, after my new servers are in place I might use one of the old servers to throw a linux/bsd box up and run it as well.

biggmike 03-28-2004 10:00 AM

Re:Computers Suck!

Ill use Microsucks crap just to get a start but that nessus looks like its basically the same idea but better since microsucks just reciently decided they cared about security.
Oh yeah iam going to install the free version of Suse Linux this week anyone use there brand of Linux before anything good or bad?
