The name of the file was C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\msconfig32.exe and it was shutting my computer down also. The other night it scared the hell out of me. I was sleeping and I guess I had the volume turned up. It has tried to shut down and restart a couple times. I have it setup so you have to enter a passwod to open windows though. I'm not sure if that helps.

EDIT: I just found out it is still changing my homepage to "findwhatever.com". Mother ******. That is starting to **** me off bad.

msconfig32.exe is a executable that lets u change certain parameters of windows like what loads.

Do u have the ORIGINAL WINDOWS XP CD? if so u may just need to re-install windows. Do u have any friends that are computer savy? actually installin windows is fine but installin all the proper drivers can intimidate novice users.

Do u have a system restore CD? Do u have anything you want to keep on your computer? Pics? Do u know how to setup your email? Its not that hard, especially w/ newer windows to start from scratch.

Honestly I dont know of any viruses that just randomly restart your computer. I bet u ran something that instaled a back door into your computer which would allow people to control it. does it restart every day? try uunn plugging your modem for a few night and see if things get different.

if i were you, i would back up all my important ----. you should then format and reinstall windows xp. what you need to do is get into your bios - when the computer immediately turns on and is counting memory press del or f1(depending on manufacturer). in one of the sub menus, you should see a "boot order" menu. get into that. change your boot order to 1. cd 2. floppy 3. ide0(or HDD0). save settings and exit bios. put your windows xp cd into the cd drive. when your computer boots up, it should say something like "press any key to boot from cd". press any key. it should now load up windows xp setup. it will ask you where you want to put the operating system. you want to put it in C:. it will then ask you do you want to format, quick format, or leave file system intact. you want to format(i only wouldn't quick format when you know that your hard drives fucked up by a virus- be safe). everything after that is pretty self explanitory, just do what it says. as far as drivers, windows xp usually has most or all of the device drivers that you need, so i dont think you need to worry about drivers. if anything, find your cds with proper drivers, or download them from the internet. one of us can help you figure out how to correctly install your drivers or anything else that comes up.

I found your problem Dr. Boost, msconfig32.exe is a viral file on your machine and is part of the windows boot process, thus its undeletable.
Visit:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com...ybot.worm.html

for instructions on how to remove it.

The reason your antivirus keeps popping up is because your computer is being used as a backdoor every time you're online and people are sending 'trojans' through to get to other computers. Norton can't pick up the spybot because either a) the virus was new with your current set of definitions or b) it was activated in a way that norton wasn't able to screen the data.

i always go through my registry to the local machine/software/microsoft/windows/current version/Run folder and delete any unneccessary entries (bookmark it). what you can do is boot a DOS disk and delete the file yourself. www.bootdisk.com

sorry im not more detailed but i gotta go

You are correct Chacko. That was the name of the virus. I went through those instructions and ran a scan without system restore in safe mode and it came back clean. When I logged back in without safe mode I found out that my homepage was once again changed to www.findwhatever.com. This is bullshit. I want to sue these bastards. They fucked my computer up.

I have the XP cd that came with my computer. How do I delete everything and reinstall XP? I'm to the point where I don't care what gets deleted. I want this ---- out of my computer. It's like having some dude sleeping in your closet and not knowing if he is going to slit your throat in the middle of the night.

When I reinstall XP, will I lose programs that I paid for such as Prog-Studio, Norton Anti-Virus, Kazza...? I guess it's a small price to pay to get rid of these damn viruses. I feel so helpless. I can't reach through the computer screen and pistol whip the bastard that is doing this.

Have you tried setting your homepage to www.homemadeturbo.com manually? and it gets rewrote?

You'll lose your installed programs, yes. You can go through and write down your registration information though, thats part of what I consider 'backing' up

If you are receiving many popups when IE is not running you probably have downloaded some spyware from someplace. Either through your ****, imesh or kazaa or a million other places. I had a very similar problem with I would leave my computer for a half hour and come back to serioulsy 212 IE windows and just as many Norton windows saying I have downloaded an .exe file. I was going crazy from seeing all the popups.

To clean up my computer I used spybot. You can read up on it here:
http://security.kolla.de/
although some people, for intstance my friends have had problems with running other programs because they deleted ---- they was used to run other programs. SAVE ALL THE FILES YOU HAVE REMOVED incase you wanted to restore them.
Other people have used adaware with no problems to delete their spyware.
HTH

Let us know your results...

Uh, I ran that scan and came back with 141 problems! Is that normal? It couldn't fix all of them though. I'm going to try to restart and run it again.

Chacko, yes I made www.homemadeturbo.com my homepage several times and it keeps changing it. I even deleted www.findwhatever.com from my cookies and history. The ****** keeps coming back like a bad case of herpes.

Thanks for all your help guys. I'll be back after I restart this thing........
