computer problem: is my CPU toast?

okay the other day i was sitting in the living room watchign TV and drinking a beer as i normally do when i get off work. i look over at my computer and it is fine, doing what it normally does. sitting there with the fans runnign and screen on showing the desktop. i wal into the kitchen and go back to the living room and notice that the monitor off. i wen tand tried to turn it on and it came on but the monitor stayed blank but then the computer shut off a few seconds later. i had to reset it by the power supply to get it to turn on again. from the side window i noticed that the CPU fan wasn't spinning. so i opened it up and seen that the heatsinc is hella dirty and clogged with dust. i clean everythign out and vacum the ---- out of everythign but it still doesn't boot up. does the same as before.

cliff notes: cpu fan stopped and now the computer won't boot up.

so did i fry the cpu for that quick time the fan was off or is it the mother board?

if it matters it is an AMD athalon (i think) +2400

Re: computer problem: is my CPU toast?

In most newer PC's, there is a feature in the BIOS for thermal shutdown... meaning if the CPU gets too hot it will shut itself down to prevent damage.

It depends on if your PC shut down because of that or if it's fried. Find out by letting it cool down, replacing the fan (or fixing the clog in the old one), and trying to boot. If it's obviously cooled down enough and your still getting no response it may be fried... good luck.

lol, ok it's cooled for a few days now and still nothign so i guess it didn't have the thermal shutdown.

It could be both the processor and the motherboard.

easy way to rule out MB... find a compatible processor (socket A, I believe) and pop it in there... if it works, it's just your proc... if it doesn't, most likely something else is f'd.

The processor will heat up in seconds if there is no heatsink/fan on it. I would remove the heat sink, re-apply thermal paste and be sure the sink is seated flush with the processor. Also be sure the fan is working. Some boards will shut down if there is no fan going.

Re: computer problem: is my CPU toast?

when you turn on the PC it should make some beeps telling you whats wrong.

do you turn it on and it does nothing? do the fans even spin up? hard drive spin up? any lights?

remove the CPU and turn it on, does it do anything different?

J-MAN 01-19-2007 04:05 PM

Re: computer problem: is my CPU toast?

yeah i don't hear the POST but the fans do turn on, HD turns on, and also the red light turns on. when i get home i will check to see if it does anythign differant if i remove it.

My bet is it's toast.(Bord and processor)

Re: computer problem: is my CPU toast?

By the time thermal shutdown takes place, the processor can be fried.

Jump the fan to power and see if it will spin, will you, or plug in a known good fan and see if it will spin?

Fixed.

Just find a replacement mobo and cpu for cheap. :-\ I'm sure someone on here will hook you up.

Re: computer problem: is my CPU toast?

Did you build the computer or did you buy it that way. If you built it then you might have a readout on the motherboard of what the problem is, mine has a display that shows codes then u just look them up in the book that it came with to see whats going on.

Fuel injected computers. Does anyone else see the paradox?

Hey quit talking ---- about the 2400+. I'm still rockin one (overclocked on the old asus a7v8x-x of course) and it's a fine proc...if you're not a gamer.

Sounds like it's fried though. Procs are cheap, try to find another socket a proc to use in the mobo. If it's good just get a cheap 3200+ and you'll be fine.

I've always noticed that AMD processors pop before intels. Almost ever time I see an AMD over heat for whatever reason, it ends up fucked. I've over heated my Intel P4 like 6 times and it just boots right the ---- up every time.

Use this as an exuse to upgrade, get you one of those fancy Duo cores!

My desktop has an old 2800+ and it's still great today and fast.

I have a 3700+ and never had a problem w/ it

lol, no. Ive fried like 3 mobo's and my amd processor is still fine.

Lol...I'm stone-age...I'm still rockin a 700mhz duron that I have to overclock to 1ghz just to run anything anymore :P 2800+ would be considered a major upgrade for me :l

Re: computer problem: is my CPU toast?

yeah i guess it is a good excuse to upgrade, ---- i think i put that computer together like 3 years ago and the proc wasn't fast then. guess its time to start searching ebay for a cheap socket A cpu.

thats cheap

but for proababy 250 you get get core 2 duo but you would also need new ram

AMD's didnt have over temp protection up until a certain era i believe, could be the Athlon series (not the XP).

Re: computer problem: is my CPU toast?

Sounds buggered, get a core duo, by the time you've fucked with fault finding you might as well have just bought some new ----.

If you have a motherboard with POST code support you might be able to analyse the fault, but given the age of the PC its doubtful.

And AMD cores generally run hotter due to their reliance on overclocking an older core design. The core duo's we use now are not only 2x as fast as the AMD dual core equivalent (in benchmarking and running our software), but run cooler and seem more reliable.

don't all mother boards give a POST beep to let you know whats wrong?

Errr, i've seen it for myself, on multiple occassions. During the image recognition algorithms we run a dual core athlon will process a frame every 18ms, the core duo's are rocking the 8-9ms range (did some benchmarks with a similar result). There's a big price differential on the top of the range cpu's but the lower end core duo's are competitive with the athlons. Seriously the core duo makes the dual core athlon look like a bit of a joke.

You might well be right, try reading your motherboards support doc's and tell us what you find out. It might well be something equally shitty like the motherboard dying etc.

Yeah its a neverending cycle. A little back the athlon 64s were making P4s look like toasters.

Re: computer problem: is my CPU toast?

Yeah if it's not giving you any kind of POST beeps theres a good chance the board could be fried too. Try turning the computer on without the CPU in the socket. If it gives some kind of beeps then it may be good.

Oh and with the socket A's that have the CPU core exposed, be careful putting the heatsink on and off. You can chip the edges of the core that sticks up in the center of the chip. I have an Athlon 1.4 GHz from back in 01, still runs but it's chipped to ----.
