Computer ?: Can I use 2 DSL modems?

I have a DSL modem hooked up to my desktop computer right now. Can I hook up a 2nd DSL modem in another room to a laptop? Will both DSL modems still work properly?

Re:Computer ?: Can I use 2 DSL modems?

yes you can, but you would have to logoff the other modem or unplug it when you want to go to the other room.
or you could just get a wireless router. then your laptop can go just about anywhere in the house.

I am sure that he for some reason has two modems and doesn't wanna buy a router.

But yeah, that will not work. You will need a router/switch.

sell one of the modems on ebay and use the money to buy a wireless router. Being able to carry the laptop anywhere and maintain full connectivity rox. Here is an 802.11g router and card combo for $50 after rebate and there are better deals out if you wait and know where to look. I've seen an 802.11g router/card for $22 after 2 rebates.

Depending on the DSL Modem model, you can modify it to work as a router... but just do yourself a favor and listen to everyone else. Good luck.

yeah go wireless, I got a wireless card for my desktop, a wireless card for my laptop, and the router for like 70 bucks or something like that.

If you go wireless, go 802.11b, no need to go to G or anything. Your transfer rate will be fine with that.

not sure how your works.. but for mine, i can purchase an extra IP for $10/mo and use a hub. they are cheaper than routers, but $10/mo adds up.

Re:Computer ?: Can I use 2 DSL modems?

Damn right it adds up. After 3 months of paying Rogers/Cogeco/Shaw/whoever the extra $10 a month, you could have a wireless router.

PureCRXtasy 01-26-2005 10:50 AM

Re:Computer ?: Can I use 2 DSL modems?

The only advantage I see to paying the extra $10 a month is that that extra IP address is another full bandwidth connection. Using a router, you're sharing the bandwidth of the single IP. Once you start getting 4-6 computers/devices all dowloading crap all at once, it starts to bog down a bit. Plus there ways to combine bandwidth from 2 coneections into one shared connection, which could be fun to play with..

Re:Computer ?: Can I use 2 DSL modems?

A cheap router wouldnt set you back much....

to use the modem you would need anouther MAC address which is what identifies your modem in the internet stream (each modem has a differnet MAC address imprinted , to get the MAC registered you need to pay $$$

A router takes that MAC and would split it into the multiple IP's you need to run multiple computers

Hope that helps

Re:Computer ?: Can I use 2 DSL modems?

---- all that ----

if you're going to just run 2 computers on the one line, get another network card for your desktip and a cross over cable. setup the desktop as a gateway and bam....both comps hooked up no problem and you dont have to deal with a hub or switch.

now if you wanna run more than 2 comps, then get a hub or switch and the network card.

if you dont wanna deal with wires, then get a wireless card for your desktop and setup your lpatop and desktop in ad-hoc mode and run it like that. no dealing with a base station there.

also, stay with 11b. you dont need to spend the extra cash for anything else, plus it will let your neighbors get free internet becuase im sure you wont set it up correctly.

benifit of doing it this way?
-your isp doesn't see that you have multiple computers hooked up to your one line.
-if you know waht you're doing, you can setup the gateway as another firewall and block most ---- that will try to get to your laptop.
- yet again, if you know what you're doing, this can be a great setup for when you're out on the road and wanna get something from home...e.g. i had my file server on the 2nd level of my home network so i could ssh into the first box, then ssh to the 2nd box and then from there access my files. both boxes were different distros that were completley updated and patched,e tc etc so it offered a hell of a lot of security to my main computer and files.

down side?
- the gateway needs to be on at all times

hope my .02 helps

Yes, but you can tell the router to give the line to only certain computers. So you can prevent it if you want.

Re:Computer ?: Can I use 2 DSL modems?

dont mean to jack the topic but have you guys seen the new nforce3 motherboard?

it has 2 broadband connection ports.

when i first saw it i was like WTF are you going to use that for?

then my friend hooked 2 spots on his router into the motherboard and bridged the connections. it quadrupled his internet speed :o

Re:Computer ?: Can I use 2 DSL modems?

ive been shopping around Ebay for a wireless router. The laptop will see occasional use around the house (when not datalogging lol). I dont think I need to go extremely high tech, i dont need to access the comp from away.

Thanks for all the info guys
