Will it take 1GB. Not sure how the comp will react if you put too much in. Never done it myself.

I would just return it for a new stick.

the max that comp will recognize is 1gb, i've maxed a mobo out before but it still ran, just didn't use all of the ram

i asked the guys at the geeksquad.. he said even if i got the gig, it would only probly come out to be like 700-800 or something like that. but said it should still work.

this was before i had this problem. didnt get the memory from them cause it was to exspensive at that time.. they told me it would be onsale in like a month or so. so i just got it off ebay

I just bought a 1 gig stick on Newegg.com b/c I switched to a microATX and had one fewer slot, so I needed to go larger per stick.

I payed just under $75, but I feel a lot better buying there than eBay or many other places.

it said in that auction that he will replace DOA items. I would just contact him ASAP and get the ball rolling.

Newegg.com has been great on my returns. They are just shy of being able to walk into a store and return something.

yeah i'm just gonna contact the guy and tell him whats up. will see what happens.

Re: comp memory help..

First thing I would try is resetting the BIOS. Unplug it, pop out the small battery on board for a few seconds.
Does it hang before the POST screen/beep?
Does it give a repeating single beep?
Do you still have your old ram plugged in?

If a bios reset doesnt work, plug in just one stick of the new ram (assuming you have 2x512 sticks), and see if it works. Repeat for the other.

Usually a RAM hang before/during POST will give a repeating beep from the motherboard; but not always.

Ditto on Newegg. They rock on RMAing broken stuff.

it did beep before a few times.. but now it dosent

i was also installing a dvd burner, but dout that has anything to do with it.

i have no idea how to reset the bios. but i'll google it and see what i can come up with.

one of my buddies told me something about a jumper?

i just dont wanna loose any info i currently have on my comp. if by doing this reset of bios, will i loose any info?

hummmm just found this..

probly could have come in handy
Dell BIOS Beep Codes:

Beep Codes Possible Causes Corrective Action
1 - 2 No video card detected Reseat the video card
1 - 2 - 2 - 3 BIOS ROM checksum error
1 - 3 - 1 - 1 DRAM refresh error Reseat the memory modules
1 - 3 - 1 - 3 8742 Keyboard Controller error Reseat the keyboard connector
1 - 3 - 3 - 1 Memory defective or not present Reseat the memory modules
1 - 3 - 4 - 1 RAM failure on line xxx Reseat the memory modules
1 - 3 - 4 - 3 RAM failure on data bits xxx of low byte on memory bus Reseat the memory modules
1 - 4 - 1 - 1 RAM failure on data bits xxx of high byte on memory bus Reseat the memory modules

but i was trying every comb with the new gig and old memory trying to get it to work. so it might have beeped when i had them both in at ounce.

this guy seems like he has the same problem..

but he's using 2 512's while i'm using just 1 1gig

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK this ---- is pissing me off!!!!

i just want memory! now NNNOOOWWW!!!!

Re: comp memory help..

well i tried the unplug of the battery deal, that was a no go. i guess the only other option i have is to see if the guy i got it from will let me exchange it for a 512 :-\

obviously the 1 gig is to much for the computer to handle, and will not notice its there.

Re: comp memory help..

unplug the dvd burner lol. if the pc reconizes a new hardware piece it has to install it first, which means boot the pc up untill windows is running, then plug in the dvd burner. also you may have a dead stick which can also make your pc act funny. so far ive upgraded my hd and ram in my laptop im using right now and all is well. gotta love 1 gig of memory and 100 gigs of hard drive space. :6 :y

Re: comp memory help..

if you added a dvd burner with the factory drive make sure one is set to master and one to slave.

Re: comp memory help..

is your bios set up for quick start or is it actually checking the size of the ram?

Re: comp memory help..

crx2fast 03-12-2007 09:51 PM

Re: comp memory help..

and theres nothing wrong with the dvd burner, it works fine.

updating the bios is something i dont want to do. to many things that could go wrong.
