Cobalt SS?
a guy i work with just bought a cobalt ss with only 7k miles. to me the thing seems like a piece of ----. its not a horrible looking car and it looks fairly easy to work on, but he started it up and it didnt idle near as smooth as my 93 civic running with uberdata(that i tuned myself) and when he reved it up it was stumbling almost everytime. has anyone else messed with these cars. i would be pissed if my new car ran like that, but i dont think he even realizes it

Re: Cobalt SS?
eh, i'm not a big fan. motors are solid but that ----- ass m62 limits you to around 275whp with what seems like thousands of dollars worth of supporting mods/bolt-ons. kid in town is making 304whp or something with EVERYTHING you can do to those cars including a tune, ported blower, and meth injection. i'll take an srt4 anyday if i had to pick. needless to say, not a big fan on this end. although i have never heard of any idling problems.

Re: Cobalt SS?
they already stopped production for 2008. i think there ugly and the electric steering and throttle make the car feel very odd to drive. i suppose if i wanted a somewhat quick car straight off the showroom floor i could understand, but with that kind of money, there are a lot of other really nice cars out there.
not to mention, on tight cornered race tracks, the suspension just doesnt seem to hold its own in a stock or lightly modded form. that platform was not designed for hardcore driving enthusiasts |
Re: Cobalt SS?
If it has any resemblance to the 88 sunbird I had back in the day....god help him...Every concievable functioning part on that car failed when it was only about 12 years old.....J bodies suck......Not sure how the build quality is on those. Maybee someone owns one here on hmt???

Re: Cobalt SS?
what does he have done to it ? are you tring to fix his problem or does he think it runs fine ?
|
Re: Cobalt SS?
he thinks its fine. i was more just asking if anyone else has noticed how shitty they are. i dont think the problem can be fixed without tuning. i think the people at gm are just retards now that i have seen this
and it is bone stock |
Re: Cobalt SS?
gm is full of idiots look at the desighn it looks like some thing that would have been ricer cool in 1995
|
Re: Cobalt SS?
i think they are junk and were made to compete with imports but just failed because they suck too much

here i come there is a difference between the cobalt ss and colbalt ss supercharged. i actually really like the ss supercharged car. if it runs shitty something is obviously wrong with it. they don't come running crappy from the factory ::) its truly idiotic to think that any manufacturer "can't tune a car". |

Re: Cobalt SS?
The cars are trash. The tunes are full of holes, from lean spots and heavy knock on bone stock cars, to stupid IAC issues that make the revs hang between shifts and on hard stops. The E-throttle is a joke. It's super aggresive when it doesn't need to be (light throttle) which causes the car to jerk all over the place if you aren't used to driving it, but lags when it shouldn't (hard driving and getting back on it after a shift). My favorite part of the car, is that if you bang second hard enough it will simply shut off. This has happened to me twice now, both times while racing people. I hit second hard and instead of tire chirp the motor simply shut off and I continued to hit the gas in vain as we coasted to the side of the road. I've never had or heard of that happening in ANY other car. I think it has to do with the E-throttle's inability to keep up with quick inputs and the throttle simple doesn't open before the clutch is let out on a fast shift. They suck even more because the owners are idiots. Check out www.cobaltss.net if you want a good laugh. "Dude you're gona blow the #4 cylinder! You need those 90000lb/hr injectors so you can run 9.8:1 AFRs to make up for the fact that your blower is blowing 700* charge air because you overspun it with a stupid small pulley. Just tune it to <10:1 AFR's and you'll have no problem breaking 240whp!!!!!1111one!!11eeleven11!!"
Someone mentioned the steering, that's one of the few things I don't have a problem with. You wouldn't even know it's electric assisted if no one told you. Handling wise those, they push through corners like tug boats. Nothing short of the e-brake will make the back end rotate. FYI, my friend owns a Redline, which is the experience I'm speaking from. Oddly enough, that car with nothing more than an intake has no problem WALKING stage 1, 2, pulleyed, tuned, etc Slobalts. So that makes me laugh even more. We actually pulled a stage 2 + i/e Shitbalt... and we had 3 people in the car, the Slobalt kid was alone. |
Re: Cobalt SS?
the supercharged cobalts are not bad. the fastest one I've seen ran 13 sec stock 1/4. but they are ok, I think chevy should have went with a turbo. for domestic sport compacts the s4t 4 in charge
|
Re: Cobalt SS?
arent the redlines turbo'd? i dont really pay much attention to new stuff though
|
Re: Cobalt SS?
Ion Redline, I should have specified. Sky Redline's are turbo. The Ion is basically identical to a Cobalt SS, but less homo IMO because there aren't 999999999 homos in the area driving them.

Either way there are a lot of them here... and it's funny to see them so happy to break into the 13s. :P Even with stage 3xy57fva alpha bravo... they're still slow as balls. :( |

Re: Cobalt SS?
15.20 is right on par i'd say. my stock z24 went 15.50 and i'd get walked by da/dc gsrs all day. also johnny, sorry to say but there are no way the majority of lsj's are going low 14's. maybe one 1 out of 100 are, but not the majority. those cars go low 15's-high 14's with the average joe-schmoe driver. they can't launch for ---- without tq braces. very lame. believe the best pass on redline forums a year ago when my buddy had his redline was a 14.6@98..

1.7 < 2.4 supercharged and its a whooping 8tenth quicker than a stock da gsr, sorry im not impressed what so ever, dont get me wrong i'd drive one prolly, thier fun cars but they could have been alot better. that im sure we will both agree on. ariel atom vs ss cobalt supercharged honda motor > gm supercharged motor that is all :D |

but its pretty lame for a 2.4l with a supercharger. without the sc it would be a 120hp 2.4l. I still think they are ok though. |
Re: Cobalt SS?
the 90 hatch I tuned with stock gsr swap ran 14.6's.
