Default CEL: 17 VSS!?!?!?!?!

Ok... messed up a little. Today, for the first time this has happened. I down shifted from 3-2 and as soon as I did the CEL came on. At the stop light I turned my car off, turned it back on, no CEL. Get going again and next time I down shift, 4-3 this time, CEL again. WTF? I get home and check the code, #17 VSS!?!? Im confused here? anyone? Is there ANY possible way this can be contributing to my bad idle. I had a bad idle (sometimes 900rpm, sometimes 300, and anywhere in between), both before and after this has happened?

Thanks guys!

Sounds funny? Is it VTEC? That might affect the VTEC engagement. Other than that I have no clue. If you need a new VSS I have one I could give you. Just pay shipping.

thing is.. it hasn't happened since, I reset the ecu and nothing. I've drivin another 20km since.

The previous owner said when his brother downshifted once while in the car the CEL came. Hasn't come on for me in 2 years. No vtec, just a d16a6.

Damn those crazy ECU's. The only other thing I could think of is a loose connection. Maybe the VSS connector is corroded or something.

Every once in a while I get a cel, but when I go to check it to see what it is, it says nothing. No codes.

Maybe your speed sensor is on its way out. Did you down shift hard? If so I wonder if the sudden drop in speed made your speed sensor send wrong voltage for a sec. Popping a CEL.

thats just the thing, my VSS is mechanical, cable driven to the back of the speedo. then a pulsing signal to the ecu. bah! I dont care, the damn cell didnt come back on yet after i cleared the ecu. Im more worried about my idle, er, or lack there of (less then 500rpm sometimes, then back to 750, back to 300.. etc.) ARG!
