The only thing I know about cast iron welding is that you should dump the piece in sand after welding, to let it cool down very slowly and evenly.

How are you welding it? MIG, TIG, sick, or gas? Are you welding cast to steal or cast to cast. As far as I know there is no way to weld cast iron to steal and get it to stay. They expand and contract at two different rates and it WILL crack. If you are welding cast to cast it can be done with a TIG welder and a special cast iron filler rod. But I am no expert, i just know what I have been told over the years by guys that weld for a living.

My HF manifold is welded to a mild steel plate and its held so far. ::Crosses fingers::

To get a good weld, you need to heat it up a bit with a torch. In my expericence, I get the best weld by using nickle rod with a stick welder, just turn down the heat a bit. Once it is welded, I wrap the part up in insulation and let it cool for a day or so. Hasn't failed me yet.

You got it ;)

The reason you heat it up is to prevent the "cooler" part of what you are welding from sucking all the heat out of your weld too fast. If it cools too fast, it will crack. Burying it in clean sand after welding it works good.

I welded my steel wastegate flange on my hf mani. All I did was turn it up pretty hot and kept
most the heat in the manifold. I was useing a stick welder and let it cool by sitting on the workbench.
Still holding today.
