Re: car salesmen?
I always thought I'd be a good car salesman, but the general concensous is they are douchebags. Not a label I'm willing to take, and not the kind of people I would work with.
But then again, you're from Jersey were the whole state is considered douchebags. lol :D |
Re: car salesmen?
exactly...i figure its in my blood. honestly i bet the fact that im not a total shithead would help me
|
Re: car salesmen?
all the salesmen at places i've worked are downright dicks who don't know ---- about what they're sellin or cars in general. they'll suck ur cock to make a buck. if you're good at bullshittin then its the job for you. pretty decent money if you get into a dealer thats moving alot of cars.

Re: car salesmen?
oh and if you do decide to do it, work at honda or somewhere were the car will basically sell itself

Re: car salesmen?
car salesman is a shitty ass job man, pay comes and goes, def. not a good career goal, i have friends that are good car salesman, and they hate it, and say the money is good sometimes other times its pathetic, look into service writeing, that is a much more career oriented job, its the smae thing except your selling service to people, good service writers make 60,000+ around here, find a car salesman that makes that much.... :l

Re: car salesmen?
ehhh depends on where you work. Where I bought my car the salesmaen got paid 300 bucks for each car they sell and some cars would have a bonus (in one case he got the 300 plus 2k bonus for selling one car). These are little car dealerships. May not sound like a lot of loot, but this is paid in cash so no need to report nothing. Sell a car a day you make 2100, at least. If you do decide to become a car salesman, my advise to you is learn how to save if you don't already. Sometimes you will sell 4 cars a day and sometimes none. So make sure you have enought to get by during those dry spells.

I think it's required that you have to know jack ---- about cars to be a sleezebag...oh I mean car salesman. I think you need a cheesy moustache too like magnum p.i. style. It's like there's no in between. Your either really stupid or your a prick. I think there grouped into the same job description as a used carpet salesman.

Re: car salesmen?
sometimes its fun to go into showrooms and ask the dumbest looking salesman a shitload of questions about a car. i went to mistu to look at the new evo 9 and this ------ cooter was like the 9 has 6spd standard, vtec, carbon fiber roof, and then i said so do you think this car could do 10's off the showroom floor in stock trim........he very confidently says oh yea absolutely lol i had to stop there because at this point im laughing in his face. you should try

Re: car salesmen?
^ So Mitsubishi finally gave in and now has Vtec... lmao :P what a moron, holy crap

Re: car salesmen?
If you are an honest person who knows about cars and wants to get people into the right car for them, you will starve.
On the other hand, if you're a person with no concience whatsoever who has no problem selling people vehicles that will bankrupt them, then you will make a killing. I've worked at dealers for the past 4 years, and there's only two types of car salesman. The kind who can sleep at night knowing what they've done, and the type who last 6 months 'cause they can't pay the bills. |

Re: car salesmen?
Good communicators sell cars. If you're quick on your feet and know how to work with people you wont have problems.
|
Re: car salesmen?
The way I see it from the managers point of view is if Youre too nice ("Well, its ok Mrs Smith if you dont like the options than maybe you should wait till a better deal comes along, or maybe next years model will have the package you want, you dont have to get it now") Might get you fired.
But if youre too pushy ("Well Mrs Smith, how about this model, it may not have the package you want but it has this and this option that you might like, or this one, it has the package you want, but its $1999 more, we can work something out, Lets go to my desk and we can talk about this") This wont get you fired but the Customer will think youre a dick. Sales is like Fishing, You sit there patiently till someone takes the bite, and when they do you lure them in. takes a special kind of person. |
Re: car salesmen?
I don't think that this is a career thing. Deciding what about it sucks so much is just splitting ---- hairs. Chalk it up as just a job and you are gonna move on.

Re: car salesmen?
^ How did you get raped like that? You guys ever watch those dateline or whatever specials where they send a car buyer and an expert yo buy a car. It's so funny cause they'll walk in and be like ok, your going to give me $__ for my trade in and I am going to pay you $__ for ___. Take it or leave it.
|
Re: car salesmen?
Thats what my father in-law is like. He's no holds barred. All or nothing. He'll leave and then in a day or so the dealership will call him back and tell him they'll go along with what he asked for but maybe like a couple dollars less then what he wanted for his car. Me I'm just like "yah I'll take whatever your gonna give me.. I just want the car I'm looking at" I had an interview once for a salesman position at a local Saturn dealership but I think I was too nice and not pushy enough. Thank god. I was unemployed at the time so I was up for anything.

Re: car salesmen?
Honda stealership had a bunch of idiots working the floor. My parents bought a CRV last fall and I grilled the holy ---- out of the manager and salesman. We went to 4 different Honda dealerships (living in Chicagoland rocks as far as dealship options) and we ended up getting a Special Edition CRV (all options) with roof rack and running boards for 2 grand less than the lower trim without any options.
It took some creative wording of what one dealer offered and feeding that to the next and so on and so forth until I decided i was tired. Took 1 day to buy the car... all day. Basically... if you get people like me coming in... you get fucked. (My salesman used to be a mechanic supposedly and didn't know the difference between a D, B, H, or K motor. "We never really called them with those names." Didn't know what a D16y8 or a B18 was even though he "worked on em all the time." Then some other scumbag salesman tried to sell us some lame "teflon your car" BS package. I basically told him to back off the original salesman's sale and that if someone is stupid enough to buy that crap they should just hide the rest of their hard earned cash in a lit fireplace. Shortly after he said he had it and he was quite satisfied ::)) |

Re: car salesmen?
The hardest part is dealing with the other salesmen that work with you. They will do anything to stab you in the back and take your sale.
And who cares if you sell somebody a car they can't afford they come in to the dealership to buy a car and they leave with one. Most people don't live within thier means. If you don't sell it to them the next guy will. they come in wanting to buy a 30000 dollar car but only want to pay 300 a month on the loan. car loans don't run for 9 years. but sometimes they can go about 5 years 56 months at $535 There you go thats what happens. by the time they've let you drive the car around and imagine showing it off to all your friends. Then they take you in to negotiate the deal. When you want the car so bad you won't leave without it and you haven't had time to think about it. |
Re: car salesmen?
Well, talking from experience, selling cars is alot better then being a service writer. I worked for years as a service writer and eventually had my own shop (it was a franchise, that was the worst!). It just ------- sucked, everyone hates you at a garage, theyre mad cause there car is broke, and even after its repaired they still hate you because your charging them "too much" (note "too much" is any amount over $5). Not to mention dealing with frickin whine ass mechanics. Dont get me wrong there are some good mechanics, but as a majority they area a bunch of whiners.
Just to qualify myself, I work at a Toyota dealer now. I find the cars pretty easy to sell, I mean really, most of the customers come in already liking Toyotas, whether they have had one or not. I hear more about shitty car dealers than pretty much anyone, so I just treat people good and thats about it. Myself, I dont really put alot of pressure on anyone, but I dont really need to, my sales dont suffer. Basically I just listen to what they are looking for and try to find the right vehicle, and terms that are within thier budget. Dmc1 is right though too, you gotta watch the other salesmen for sure, and some people will just make bad decisions. I would normaly ask people what they were looking to spend in the first place, that way I can show them the right car, and avoid the payment dillema. As far as used cars, if its not mint, it go's to auction. I know thats not how everyone does it, but we dont really want to sell anything thats going to be a pain in the ass. I mean, where does that leave us, if we sell a car like that TC. The customer is pissed, they're going to trell everyone that we sold them a shitbox. Not to mention we will got NO repeat bussiness and the customer is going to hold us responsible for that crap ass car. So it just isnt worth it, fo us anyways. I dont know if I would look at it as a career, its a great job, but you cant really go anywhere with it. I'l probably do it for a while anyways, the pay is good and theres no real responsability. I would say its a much better "job" or "career" then a service writer, thats for damn sure. |

Re: car salesmen?
It is a month to month deal, so the pay gos up and down for sure. I would say though, at the place I work, if I sell like 6 cars (using an average) that I would probably make a little over 40K. But thats only selling 6 cars. A more reasonable expectaion would probably be to sell 10 - 14 cars a month.
Its a job where you have to sorta be aware of the seasonality curve (ie febuary sucks). I can tell you that the top salesman last month make a little over $7000 for the month, but obviously that isnt evety month. |
