Calling on all subaru gurus...I have a new project in planning, need some input!

I'm getting sick of Honda's, and I love boost. Only problem is for me the 2 never seem to work together too well. :P So once my hatch is back together, I'm starting on a new project...a subaru project.
Here's the project car...it's a '97 legacy gt with the n/a ej25 dohc motor and an auto slushbox tranny. I've read from a few subie forums that alot of legacy and imprezza parts are interchangable, so basicly I want to transform this car into one mean grocery getter. ;D From what I've seen alot of EJ20/22/25 parts are interchangable, so I want to do a nice solid-deck ej25 if possible with a very nice sized (read: larger than stock) turbo and a 5-speed trans swap. If anyone has any good info, reads, or just awesome subie forums with great info, please...please! Hook me up! ;D

Id say ur better off Selling ur car and buying a 5-speed car. U can find them all the time on craigslist with blown head gaskets for cheap. Oh and have fun Subarus SUCK :1

Its too bad no one fixed the turbo projects. When we turbo'd my neighbors 2.5RS we had some decent pics.

get a stock boosted motor to drop in, its a lot easier then turboing an N/A car.
i'd go with a pre-03 STI ej20-t, its 25hp less then a newer sti 2.5l but a whole lot cheaper

Yes a lot of parts are interchangeable. Search for that 2.5rs turbo writeup

I still have my stock manifold from the WRX in my garage somewhere, I believe it fits. Oh and the Intercooler, and injectors, etc etc. I have most of my stock parts. The cars are great, they look good, they can take a beating fine. People just don't know how to drive them.

NASIOC is the best source for info, but it is huge and confusing sometimes. I do agree that starting with the 5sp is probably easier.

The JDM ver 6 STi engine is a monster. Can take tons of preassure in stock form. Not bad for about $2,000. Cheaper than building your own engine. But still too much for most of us HMT folk..

I would start off with a 5-spd car but there's only one problem...they didn't release a 5-spd gt that year in the states, auto tranny only according to the dealership. The car was basicly a gift to me, and required a head gasket and 2 valves to get it back up and running. The worst part of putting it all back together was the timing belt, nothing like a 6 foot long belt and having to count teeth in between the 4 cam gears to get everything right, not to mention the countless idler pulleys in the mix. The car is solid and extremely well taken care of (older guy who was ---- about maintenence owned it) and has only a little rust bubble up by the windshield.
I was looking into a jdm sti swap as a complete package, and I think that's the way to go. $2k for me is only 2 weeks of work with some overtime mixed in, and my fiance' agreed to let me do it too. ;) The reason I wanted to use this platform was (A). it was free, (B). most parts are interchangable just like honda's, (C). for being a grocery getter it has a sports suspension setup already on it, and handles just as well as my '04 wrx with just a slightly smoother ride. Pretty sad to say, but this car will out-handle my hatch in a corner...it just doens't have enough go-fast to it to make it keep up lol. Plus the stock engine has 260,000+ miles on it, so it's time for something new under the hood. :)
