Your tools are a tax write off. Dude why are you changing oil didnt you go to school. If your not throwing atleast 17 bucks an hour has a mechanic your getting the shaft

I forget where I saw it years ago, but there's a federal? standard sheet that should be able to be found. Then again, the federal numbers never match free market numbers though.

o ok, yep ------- bullshit. Went to uti, wasted 27 grand graduated with a 4.0 average got "student of the course 3 times" and missed only 2 days the entire time.. Got dicked out of mercedes because they ran out of spots for me at the time.. (or as they said) Worked at bmw doing parts 8$ a hour, worked at toyota as a lube tech 10$ a hour, now im at nissan as a lube tech 10$. Was promissed i would move up asap but that was a crock of ----... I do all the techs bullshit stuff when they dont want to (aka tons of warranty ----) so im way more then a lube tech and they trust me to do anything, i just get paid as a lube tech. Tried to get another job but no ones hiring now adays..

Dude hit up all the little independent import repair shops you can do better than changing oil after spending that much cash. UTI once again shows it cant get people jobs your not alone everyone I know who finished has gotten the shaft after finishing. Not to mention they charge more than a state university which is beyond me. It costs more to become a mechanic than an engineer :1

Reminds me of the noob on here that couldn't even properly construct a sentence yet thought that UTI was the path to success.

You're getting f'ed pretty bad man. I'm in Alabama (aka one of the states with the lowest cost-of-living) and wouldn't take a job paying that little. I have no degree and spend all day surfing the internet.

You're in an expensive state, with a degree, getting paid chump change.

Find a different place or open your own shop if possible.

isnt $17 an hour in california LOW income?
Here in Indiana mechanics make around $20 an hour/shop charges 50-60 an hour.
Thats why I only charge about 40% of what shops charge for honda maint.
Get me more side jobs making money working o cars when I'm not a work (which I dont do much there at all either).

The shop I do fab work for here and there charges $90 for general stuff and more for me. It depends on the job. Some jobs I just quote. I did a ram horn, DP and dump tube in a sleeved LS/VTEC Civic and charged the shop $1k. They just tacked on a few hundred on top of that. On the other hand, I did a stainless 3" X pipe into magna flows that dumps before the axle on a 67ish Fairlane and I only charged them $240 since they bought the parts. Customer cost was $1200. It was a quick job.

Granted TIG welding and fabrication are a bit different than changing oil but if you are skilled and schooled You are worth much more. Go get another job where you are paid what you are worth. I was only charging $40 an hour to the shop because I use their shop, lifts, electricity, and Argon, but even I need to go up to at least $60 an hour to make it worth my time to drag my ---- down there anymore.

You can make $10 an hour at Target or Bestbuy in CT. CA may be different but I can't imagine your cost of living is much lower than it is here.
