Buying a welder, couple quick questions

I need to buy a welder for the sole purpose of welding charge pipes and a downpipe. I want one with a gas hookup so my welds don't look like birdshit. Here's what I have in mind:

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=55247

My quick questions are, this is 115V so it plugs into a regular outlet right? And will this be able to do charge piping and a downpipe? Give me any info you can, and if there is a better one for around the same price show me and tell me why!

Thanks in advance

Re: Buying a welder, couple quick questions

i dont kno everything there is to welding but i do kno that if it says flux mig then ur got gonna be burning gas (argon) cuz argon is wut makes the wire bond with the steel and if u have flux then flux takes its place so u dont have to run argon...i would just look around for a mig welder that runs gas instead of flux cuz flux comes out like ----...try goin to lowes i saw a nice lincoln there i think it was in the 500's? i could be wrong

Re: Buying a welder, couple quick questions

You didn't help at all. I want a flux welder with the option of adding gas so I can do both.

Re: Buying a welder, couple quick questions

ohhhhhhh...sry i read ur post wrong...yea that seems like a pretty good welder...go for it...just dont expect to be doing big jobs with it cuz that is a small welder but it should do ur pipes no problem...lemme know how it comes out

Re: Buying a welder, couple quick questions

Just drive up to my house on the weekend and you can make whatever you want.

The description of that welder looks like it's what you're looking for, but the price is so low that I'm not sure how much I would expect out of it. I was looking for a deal too, but the low price on most welders scared me about it's ability. I ended up spending close to $700 for the welder and gas setup. :-\

Re: Buying a welder, couple quick questions

Thanks for the offer Steve. I just bought the welder, let's just hope it'll work for my pipes. Do these usually come with any wire? It doesn't say it does so I'm thinkin no. But then again I don't really know ---- about welding. Anything else I should buy besides gas? I'm just gonna go fluxcore now and get gas later.

Re: Buying a welder, couple quick questions

does it come with the helmet and gloves?...prolly not mine didnt...but invest in an auto darkening helmet i bought mine on ebay it works great i think i payed 80 bucks for it...it just makes it easy to see where ur gonna start...good thing to have if ur new to welding...but wire runs about 10 bucks a spool...thats wire to be used in gas welding...not sure about flux-wire...good luck

MikeJ-2009 05-22-2005 08:10 PM

Re: Buying a welder, couple quick questions

Mine came with the face shield holder upper thing, flux wire, and the gas conversion kit. When I bought the gas I got a tank, and the mig wire.

I bought a $10 helmet yesterday at this used tool store, but the lens wasn't dark enough, cause my eyes still hurt. I took the lens out of the face shield holder upper that came with the welder and replaced it into the new helmet. Now it's good. Damn my eyes hurt. :-[

Re: Buying a welder, couple quick questions

Lincoln electric makes a damn good flux/gas welder. It is somethign liek 100 amps that me and a couple friends went in on. My first time ever welding and teh welds looks pretty damn good on some of the things I did. I have pics somewhere in the general discussion. I just finished my downpipe the other day tehre are pics of it in forced induction. The really large welds on it look like ass, but those were done by a muffler shop befor eI got the welder. The ones I did are where the flex pipe is wleded to teh downpipe and at teh flange on teh flex.

EDIT: here are some pics of the flanges I did on my exhaust with teh same welder...

Re: Buying a welder, couple quick questions

After getting the gas, I don't think I'll ever flux again. I started making a cart with flux, and the ---- was falling apart during "torture tests". Mig owns.

What advantage does 230V offer over a 115V welder?

Pardon you? I promise you there is such thing as 2 phase. I work with it on a daily basis. I don't think there is one single person on here with a 3 phase welder.

What country are you in? I'm 100% positive. 99% of the city I live in has a 2 phase/240v power supply.

Looks pretty much the same as the one I bought except 230V. Where do you guys plug these things in if you're using them at home? Unplug the dryer and weld in the basement or what?

Search through Murdocs old posts. We walked him through an online electrical course on how to bring power to his welder in his apartment.

We shouldn't be arguing about 2 phase or 3 phase. We should just ask which one of you depends on being an electrician to pay your bills every month.. ;)

I see what you're saying and it confuses the ---- out of me. That I can't explain. I know that in order to power a 240v welder you need 2 seperate 120v phases, which doesn't explain why they say they only require a single phase for 240v welders. ??? I don't understand that.........
