Default Buying a cheap jeep 4.0

About to purchase a VERYY high mileage jeep cherokee with the good ol' 4.0 i6 in it. I know a bunch of guys have theses on here. anything i need to look at before i go buy it tomorrow? any common problems at high mileage. It has all highway miles by a nice little old lady on it, its an auto and looks to be in GREAT condition. Only very high mileage. Its in a laredo and ill probably get it for less than a thousand. Anything i should look for or anywhere you can direct me to some good forums and whatnot to look at?

How much is really high? 4.0l are good for some high miles. Leaky rear main and valve cover gasket is common. Pinion slop i would check, smell the tranny fluid, check the fluids, give the front end a good shake. Death wobble is an easy cure with some front end parts and or a new track bar.

P.S. My Dana 44 rear goes in my XJ Sunday!!

260K.... hahaha

yeah drove it around offroad a little and a lil high speed freeway stuff. no front end slop at all. Engine does have oil all over it, but i figured that was from the oil cap being right on top of the leaned back engine. I probably will trade bo bo the magic chrysler for it. So itll be like 500 dollars maybe. Just going to be a slightly more reliable car to drive until i get a car for college. Heard 4.0's are reliable as hell but have no experience on the subject

Let me see. I had the tranny rebuilt twice. and the awd was shitting because of the braking system. I sold it and a month later the transfer case and tranny took a ----.

Edit: Oh the axels went bad which is common. + rear wheel bearings.

Mine was in kickass condition in and out.

my gf's mom has a v8 5.2l. It hauls ***, but suspension is plain sloppy. I dont know what it is.

T-case leaks and rear wheel bearings are ------- loud as hell. Also, something in the head makes some weird noise. I have no clue what it is cus I know NOTHING about domestic type engines. I'm thinking maybe a rocker? if they have those?

I want to buy a 2000+ jeep. Theyre hella nice and very comfortable.

what year is it?

90's and lower had the renix electronics which were sometimes troublesome but not horrible.

also, the 90's and older had a cooling system where the coolant overflow is part of the system and is always pressurized, no radiator cap. These like to crack the bottles as they get old and brittle.

also, all the 4.0's have a failure point at the crank pulley. If you see any rubber sticking out of it at all, its gonna need replaced immediately, takes about an hour and runs 40-60 bucks.

my recommendation is go ahead and buy it, and almost immediately flush the cooling system, change the waterpump, thermostat, serpentine belt, both radiator hoses, crank pulley, all at once. jeep just barely gave these motors enough cooling system, so it is crucial that it always is in tip top running condition.
