Built my 1st PC!
Well I've now successfully built my first ever PC. Suprising how simple it is. In the end, the whole setup cost me just under 700 bucks. Just a couple specs of what I built are:
AMD Athalon X2 Dual-Core Abit motherboard 1000mhz FSB LG DVD Burner Sony DVD-ROM 80GB & 250GB Sata2 Hard Drives 1GB RAM ATI 256mb/256bit video card Wireless/USB 2.0, firewire... Centurion Case I got everything off newegg, but the case I got locally at microcenter. So far it's working pretty well, and I think I saved myself a ton of money by doing it myself! Here's a couple crappy pics. http://dsmstyle.com/forums/attachmen...4&d=1165098911 http://dsmstyle.com/forums/attachmen...5&d=1165098911 http://dsmstyle.com/forums/attachmen...6&d=1165099057 |

let me double check...
...yep, fresh out of cookies. |
Re: Built my 1st PC!
You should set it up to run in dual channel mode, nig nog. You'll notice a nice bump in speed.

Re: Built my 1st PC!
Not sure what dual channel means exactly. I'll look it up. But right now it's running way better then my old Intel Centron 2.0Ghz. I have it hooked up to my 42" LCD TV right now. Works pretty nice!

Re: Built my 1st PC!
Open up the motherboard manual, have a look see. If those sticks or ram are the same part number - same exact size, speed, latencies, etc, then sticking them in the correct sockets will allow you to run them in dual channel mode, meaning you have two seperate memory busses instead of one shared bus, and therefore twice the potential memory bandwidth.
I can tell by the two different color RAM sockets on your motherboard that it is dual channel capable. If the two sticks of memory are identical to each other, and the motherboard BIOS is dual-channel capable but might have to fiddle BIOS or flash BIOS to enable this. :) |

Re: Built my 1st PC!
Dam, if you can do it, I sure as hell should be able to. :P

Im still rocking my 1995 Compaq Presario 466mhz :6

Re: Built my 1st PC!
Dude get a better computer. the 1995 is old as ----. I have a 2.5 ghz for $325 with a $70 video card and and $50 wirerless card and its pretty fast for how cheap it is.

Re: Built my 1st PC!
I have a 3.06 Ghz for $200 with $250 video card and free wrt54g jacking one of the neighbors wireless connections so I can fill my harddrives full of porn. The laptop I'm surfing on now is a 700 Mhz stepped down to 457 Mhz. It's running TinyXP rev3, right at 67 Mb worth of background processes and no bloat installed. It surfs the web about as fast as the higher end piece of machinery, and does a solid job playing movies.
If I wanted to play new games or dick around in Photoshop or CAD then you'd notice a difference. The big differences in processor performance and software are all aimed at the multimedia market, which a lot of us don't care a whole lot about. |
Re: Built my 1st PC!
Figuring out what to buy is the difficult part. Putting it together is simple.

Re: Built my 1st PC!
They are identical sticks of RAM. I wanted 1GB of RAM, and these came as a pair of 512 sticks. I'll dig through my motherboard manual and have a look see about setting it up the other way. And about the porn, it's all on my old Hard Drive. I have yet to take the stuff off of my old HD and throw it on this one. Probably something for me to do tomorrow.

Re: Built my 1st PC!
for dual channel ram, you need to buy ram thats actually paired, you cant just take two pieces of ram, they have to come in one package.

Re: Built my 1st PC!
I've gotten away with pairing up two different brands and latencies of memory before on a dual channel motherboard. Usually what will happen if the timings and latencies aren't the same is the motherboard will set both sticks of RAM to run at the speed of the slowest one.
A lot depends on the motherboard you have and how forgiving it is on what kind of memory you use. |
Re: Built my 1st PC!
Most won't go into dual channel at all, they just stay in single channel. In the future they probably will, but it's not a very standardized feature yet.

Re: Built my 1st PC!
JD is right, we use pretty much that exact set up in work (we build about 40 industrial pc's a month). It'll run dual channel, it should be in the bios set up.
Decent system for the price, but having seen what the core duo's do compared to the comparable (in price and spec) amd chip i'd buy the core duo. They're about 2x as fast, for any given clock speed. P.S. anyone can build a pc. |
Re: Built my 1st PC!
HomemadePC FTW!
yeah def fix the ram for dual channel. you won't regret it. oh yeah, newegg is the only way to go. |
