Building a hoist?
 

So I have to lift an engine out of a car I'm parting out. I need a hoist. They're like 200 bucks, so of course the HMT in me kicked in and I said, I can do it cheaper.

I've got an 8 foot pressure treated 4x4 left over. I figure if I get 3 more @ $8 per board, two for side supports and the third to use for gussets/feet/support, and some hard ware I could throw together a frame for probably $40 bucks. My uncle has a chain hoist I could easily hook to it. I could also get some locking casters and roll it around my garage.

Shitty idea or no? I'm probably not going to lift any big blocks with it maybe a 22re would be the heaviest thing to lift.

buy one used off craigslist for 100 and I think they even go on sale for 100 bones.. engine hoist are worth the investment. I dont know how many times I've used mine and I bought mine off ebay.

ur idea works me and my gramps did the same thing and we lifted a f22a6 engine and tranny out

Got mine at HF for $100. I wouldn't even try to ---- around with a wooden hoist.

My neighbor built a wooden one, it was permenantly burried though. He hooked a comealong to it and pulled the engine out of his S10. Worked but looked dangerous lol.

if you already have a chain hoist just throw that single 4x4 across the rafters in your garage so it ------s the weight cross a few. then hook the hoist to it, free. If your garage is drywalled on the ceiling just go into the attic to find the best location, and cut a small hole to drop a chain that you can hook the hoist too.

or strap it to a tree like them rednecks do

I just bet a 40 dollar wooden hoist will get in the way more than it ends up being useful.

I'd definitely pay the extra $60 and know that a wooden contraption from the middle ages isn't going to fall apart and drop a chunk of metal on my ass, gouging out a second -------.

Just pay the money and know that you'll be alright, and not have to fool with anything.

I got mine for $70 through Craigslist. You can find a steal on there all the time, otherwise $100 at HF all day.

Get one used off craigs list, use it then sell it again and make your money back.

That way it's only a temporary investment if you really need the 100 bucks.

I paid $60 for a used HF one on CraigsList and have used it once. It was worth it.
