dude i have been in this situation, and let me tell you its not pretty.
i had a friend just like you said, i met his girlfriend befor he did, they went out for 4 years, i would chill with her/talk to her on the phone everyday ext, ext....
well this is what happened. she wanted to go to prom, but her boyfriend/my good friend, did not have the money to go. so being a friend to her she asked me to go and i went. well you no what happens on prom NIGHT
so basicaly i started dating this girl, and i actualy contfronted her former boyfrind/my friend... and lets just say he didnt take it so good. i lost him as a friend and my roomate/another good friend, over this one stupid bitch, who ended up being a little **** to begin with so i lost her and 2 very good friends---to this day i still dont talk to them

moral of the story... DO NOT DO IT!!!!

I hear you, and morally I understand fully, its cardinal sin to cross the line with the friend's ex(especially when your close), *gasp* lol BUT reality wise...I'm no different than the next man to hit on her right? but one of the reasons I'm really leaving this up to chance rather than pursue her hardcore is I don't wanna lose either of them like that. right now I think best thing to do is just hit her with subtle hints every now and then and see where it goes, than worry about how the outcome will be...double edged sword

and this isn't about getting some quick ***...although that would come with the territory I guess. :P I'm waaaaay past that stage of life, if I was in it for just some quick ***, I wouldn't even be racking my brain over this, I'd still be messing with some fluke *** hoodrat chicks...a bootycall is no big deal to me. trust I'm more interested in her as a person and just the way her life is going right now is perfect for me cause I'm on the same road(my boy wasn't exactly), plus shes no where near being a **** or anything like that, so if we do have anything, I'm not worried about it being a pointless fling.

but whatever happens, I'm definently not ignoring any of the advice yall are giving, everything is considered...yall are some cool peeps
