Bastard cars... chevy motor in the ford
My brother has a 67 mustang with the shitty 200ci I6. My uncle has a freshly rebuilt chevy 350 with a mild cam, new carb, etc.
For the motor and a 3 spd tranny :-X he wants 500 for it because he just wants it gone. From what I hear it's going to be a very tight fit because of the shock towers in the mustang. Any comments on it fitting/installation/ etc. would be good. Thanks |
Re: Bastard cars... chevy motor in the ford
Tell him not to do it :(
And get a dead RX7 |
Re: Bastard cars... chevy motor in the ford
hehe.... that would be fun... unfortunately the point is keeping the mustang so I dont think thats happening
|
Re: Bastard cars... chevy motor in the ford
why would you put a 350 in a classic mustang stick with a ford engine and try and find a 289 or 302 hell even a 351 C/W
|
Re: Bastard cars... chevy motor in the ford
I'd put it in because it's a great deal? why not besides cross/breeding
|
Re: Bastard cars... chevy motor in the ford
Chevy engines go in Chevy's
Ford engines go in Fords not a hard concept... ::) |
Re: Bastard cars... chevy motor in the ford
Better yet a nice ratod motor?
Oh and it's Ford's and Chevy's go into everything but each other :8 |
Re: Bastard cars... chevy motor in the ford

Re: Bastard cars... chevy motor in the ford
This would be a fun non-standard swap that would certainly generate lots of interest and irritation with the diehards. You would certainly get a lot of fun out of it.
That said, there will be a lot of custom fabrication required. Transmission Mounts, Shift Linkages, Motor mounts, headers, and and a custom drive shaft are the more difficult ones that come quickly to mind when doing this swap. These items will be moderatly costly and time consuming. There will also be some minor electrical considerations. This is not a swap I would consider to be a cheap swap, simply because you are getting a good deal on the engine. The fabrication and time required will easilly offset the amount that you save on the engine. If you save $300 on the Chevy engine, and blow $500 on getting it installed, you really haven't gained a whole lot financially if you could have gotten the OEM solution for $600 in the first place. (These number are not real, just examples, you'll need to do your own math with real world numbers to see if it works out.) Nothing beats planning. Take a look at the chevy engine and start figuring out how you are going to adapt each of the key items to the car. Figure out how much each item is going to cost. Custom driveshafts are not cheap, same for headers, etc. Let the numbers (time / money) make the decision for you. Of course if you have already decided that this swap is for you based on emotional reasons. Then good luck! Either way, post pics Nukka! (And don't forget to plan ahead for the turbo and intercooler placement!) Craig |
Re: Bastard cars... chevy motor in the ford
get a tape measure, if the engine is narrower than the shock towers, throw it in. Should be fine, IIRC the 302 & 350 are within an inch of each other in total width.
If it fits, then why not. Ford and GM have done worse from the factory. http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/7121/dimplediedfx6.jpg http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/7121/dimplediedfx6.jpg Cross manufacturer engine swaps are key. |
Re: Bastard cars... chevy motor in the ford
Come to think of it, AMC had all components from the big 3 in their cars.

200 I-6 is a fine engine. You'd make good power with a turbo on it. |

Tell him to find a dead RX7 and go all out with it. He won't regret it :)

Re: Bastard cars... chevy motor in the ford
I need to get the videos of Scott Fountain's RX7 running. It only made 375 whp and he sprayed 100-175 shot on it. The nose would come up past 45 degrees, he'd let off the throttle, it'd run 1.6 60'. Trap speeds were all over the place from the 90 mph to the 12x mph range, all consistent 6.6x in the 1/8th. Pretty sweet ride.

Re: Bastard cars... chevy motor in the ford
The 1JZ fits much better. The exhaust is on the passenger side, so it clears the steering shaft much better. Also the engine mount is closer to the SR/KA mounts, so the mount is directly off of the x-member, making it stronger. The shifter comes through the factory location, P/S lines bolt up. Oh, and it's cheeper, but will hold as much power.
