Barely Failed Emissions.. how to fix my "problem"?
Car:
1993 Honda Civic Si (Hatchback) Motor: 1995 OBD1 GSR - Skunk 2 Intake Mani, AEM Cold Air Intake (the real kind), DC 4-2-1 Exhaust - Stock Exhaust Piping/Muffler/Cat ECU: P28 - - - - - - - - - -HC (PPM) - CO (%) - CO+CO2 (%) - O2 (%) - RPM Cruise Limit: 190 - - 1.4 - - 6 - - NA - - NA Cruise Emissions: 139 - - .54 - - 15.14 - -.53 - - 3150 Result: Pass - - Pass - - NA - - NA Idle Limit: 220 - - 1.2 - - 6 - - NA - - NA Idle Emissions 245 - - .55 - - 14.75 - - 1.2 - -750 Result: Fail - - Pass - - NA - - NA - - NA SO.. wtf? How do i fix that. It does idle at like 800 like a good little honda, and it produces no visable emissions except when cold And, I don't know if it makes a difference, but for the car info, its a SEDAN, and a 1.5 liter.. which is incorrect. Stock is 1.6L, and its a Hatchback, not a 4 door POS.. Help appreciated. I definately need to get this bitch passed, registered, insured, before Friday.. for our local "High School Drags" event at a local raceway ;) |
Re: Barely Failed Emissions.. how to fix my "problem"?
so they are testing your gsr motor against a d15b7? not sure how it is up there, but in cali, you are supposed to register the new engine with you car. and when they test it, it will be against the car the new motor came from. but only 2% of the people do that.
sorry man. |
Re: Barely Failed Emissions.. how to fix my "problem"?
yeah telling us where you live will help
make sure it goes in nice and warm! if its failing hydroCarbons isn;'t that a sign of a failing CAT? |

Re: Barely Failed Emissions.. how to fix my "problem"?
when i smogged in my 94 civic DX, with a b16 (just an intake and exhaust) i failed, not exactly sure but i think it was the cruise emissions, i went to shucks and bought the gauranteed to pass ----, ran it through a tank, filled up, and went back and passed... RAPE the ---- out of your car before you pull up, i was doing pulls in front of the place, haha. Also, if there is a long line, rev it to 3-4000 and let it sit there, or rev up and down (Josh Ross Trick, haha) they will look at you like your nuts, but a hot cat is a cleaner cat, but i passed when i went back.... -Zac

Re: Barely Failed Emissions.. how to fix my "problem"?
sorry bout that. Seattle, Washington.
the cat is probably still the original cat.. and i've got one from my old 94 civic 4door with about 1000 miles on it. just stopped making that clicking noise ;) i'll try that and go tomarrow |
Re: Barely Failed Emissions.. how to fix my "problem"?
if you can, put a new cat in...but make sure that ---- is hot hot hot when you go in...take it for a good drive and just leave it running while its waiting to go in

Re: Barely Failed Emissions.. how to fix my "problem"?
run low octane gas, get the car hot, if that doesnt work, borrow an safc or vafc from a friend, install it an lean out te low rpms, I got a turbo b16 to pass as a 1.5l dpfi motor like that

prior to testing, it had done some showing off (the swap was recent, so ppl are still oohing and awwing), drove 6 miles, with the last 2 on the freeway. so it was pretty hot. although, i sat at a red light just before, and waited in line probably 10 minutes after i arrived.. i'm gonna try revving to about 3K every once in a while im waiting in line. |
Re: Barely Failed Emissions.. how to fix my "problem"?
;D well you have an hc problem an thats not cat realted......Hc is raw unburned fuel CO is partially unburned fuel
Cause of high hc are as follows valves out of adjustment, spark plug missfire due to wrong gap or defective plug. Ignition timing off, Leaky injector head gasket seaping low compression. i would check those first. You do have some high co at cruise so it is possible it is being over saturated Just my 2 cents since i do the emmissions testing for peeps to get them to pass at my work. |
Re: Barely Failed Emissions.. how to fix my "problem"?
of those possible causes, i have a feeling its the ignition timing. it was tuned and chipped prior to me buying it- he kept the chipped ECU. Well, tomarrow, i'm gonna check the things you said, replace the cat, and losen to bolts to my muffler ;)
gee, i sure hope exhaust doesn't leak out before the muffler ::) [/sarcasm] |
Re: Barely Failed Emissions.. how to fix my "problem"?
Hello I'm new to this forum blah blah blah. I have a swap honda blah blah blah.
Anyway, to pass you can simply park nearby the smog place. Turn the car off put a jumper in your ecu and turn it on. Then you can retard your timing on your dizzy from this point on. Turn the car off and remove the ecu jumper. The car might run a bit slower, but it will pass. Set your timing back after you finish the test the same way you set it before.. I had to do this on my civic and it passed like a mofo. I hope this helps. |

Re: Barely Failed Emissions.. how to fix my "problem"?
AFTERMATH:
Passed - by a whole lot now putting out 96 HC PPM in idle, as opposed to 245 :P Solutions: Cat w/ 1000 miles on it Retarded ignition 8*.. know why? cuz it was advanced 8*!! I got the idea from a HT member, who said he worked at an emissions place. told me to check my ignition timing, and since i knew it was tuned on a different ECU before, i knew that had to be it. Hooked up the lil light gun, and what do you know, its 8* advance. so now its back to 0-1* advance, only because it wont go retard. now i can actually feel my vtak y0! |
Re: Barely Failed Emissions.. how to fix my "problem"?
good work!
Must suck to have emissions. I did them once when I was 16, then MN stopped testing, and the cops don't know ---- so they wouldn't know that a honda isn't a factory turbo car. O0 |
