baked on brake dust
 

Well I got a set of wheels from a friend of mine, but he never cleaned them. But I need to know how the ---- do I take the baked on brake dust off the wheels.

I tried:

1. simple green
2. wheel cleaner
3. brake clean (works a little bit)
4. wire brush (works a bit, but scratches the wheel too)

I am so stumped. This brake dust is just baked on so good that I can't even rub it off with my finger nail.
Is there anything that I can use to soften it up? ???

Ahh I was wonder what wheels you had on when i saw you today. I'd just try some jaspers paint stripper, that normally does the job.. other then that i think your going to have to let them soak in something for a day .

that castrol super clean is pretty bad ass. i soaked some carboned up pistons in that stuff for like 20 minutes, they looked brand new after that

Yea they are RS Limited something, that I got from Charles, that fucker never clean those wheels.

depending on the time, but I'm assuming that the baked on dust isn't like 10 years old anyways.

I've cleaned some 13 year old rims with some off the shelf wheel cleaner and a toothbrush. Also steel wool works good for the harder areas. Spray on the wheel cleaner and the scrub it off. I don't like using a wire brush, cause it'll scar the finish more than I would like. The wheel cleaner I used lately was Eagle one I think. But yeah, I think the westley's wheel bright is more agressive. The eagle and meguirs GENERAL wheel cleaner are pretty mild.

I would guess that the wheels are about 5yrs old. he had them on a G35 with big brake kit and an SR20DET putting down about 500 whp. So you can only imagine what kind of beating they got. Thanks guys.

do you just want to clean them or do you want to strip them to paint them

if there not painted id try copper wool.. it works great on getting ---- off chrome and other metal without scratching it.
