Bad day dyno tuning:(

Well, I went in to adjust AFR's on my D16a6 today and blew my headgasket on the dyno. White smoke everywhere. Damn exhaust system had most of my coolant in it. What does this mean??? More MONEY to be spent.

How about pray its a headgasket rather than a cracked sleeve :-\

Or have you already tore it apart?

Yeah, I have it torn apart already. Cylinder walls look fine. I drove the car home on 3 cylinders

Ever since the turbo went on I adjusted it really rich just to be safe. When it went, the afr's at full boost were 11.5. I'll take some pics of the electrodes and post them in a few minutes. I really don't think that the pistons or the rods are involved. They looked fine to me, but again I might be wrong.

well you got lucky ;)

Headgaskets are cheap, labor is easy to replace them. But still sucks, what kinda power were you at? and the A/F's?

Re:Bad day dyno tuning:(

pics of plugs please. Also what amoutn of boost were you running at 130hp ? what type of dyno wre you on ?

HMT-Admin 10-24-2003 11:36 PM

Re:Bad day dyno tuning:(

How much timing were you running? what was your base?

You may want to consider using the Z6 headgasket as a replacement headgasket. Its the strongest D-series gasket in stock form, tripple layer metal, and fits perfectly on A6's

I was at stock timing. What is the part number or the years that that the Z6 was used.

Just go to honda, and ask for a 92-95 Civic SI/EX headgasket, its the d16z6 one, about 55-60 bucks.

May want to pop one of those pistons out and take a close look at your ring lands..

Re:Bad day dyno tuning:(

That sucks. It doesn't look to me like anything MAJOR happened. Good luck.

Jeff, the z6 is the strongest headgasket? How swappable is it with a y8? I need to get the whole top end kit, but what about just ordering the whole z6 for my y8?

Looks like #3 was the dead hole?
What is it with #3 always being the one? Heat?

llok athe the electrods of the plugs in the pics. they have a white chalky look to them. more like calcium. thats a sure fire sign of burning oil. oil contains alot of sulfur. thats how you cant tell.
