backfiring

when i am decelerating, i get these loud popping noises as if the engine were backfiring. I have no cat, and exhaust. Is this normal for cars with exhaust. I checked my timing, and fixed it accordingly. It seemed to remedy the problem to some extent but it still does occur. i dont know what else it could be. any ideas?

Re:backfiring

you're probably hearing the hot exhaust gases bounce against each other and ignite again. Opening the exhaust halfway (err like a cat-back type) to 3" might help reduce the sound. But you'll lose more low end HP.
