AWD conversions

What is your opinion, if you had the time and money and fab skills would you do it

What car would you do it on?
I'm thinking a 93 sedan civic with rear 88 wagon trailing arms, and the diff welded in to a reinforced rear end.

would be a sick setup, but AWD civic ---- is hard to find in canada.

Re:AWD conversions

i would proabably buy a wrx sti or a nissan suv in 4wd.
i test drove a nissan suv yesterday for fun, and thoe things rip it up even on snow and ice. my civic just spins and does't go anywhere and this thing launches super hard.

awd is my new favorite friend.
but i would never fab a fwd honda into an awd one.

That'd be sweet.

4thGenTurbo, I like your idea. Maybe I should not sell my car, and do that so it doesn't suck anymore.

Well I was thinking, The 1993 sedan lx is about the same lenght as a 1988 AWD wagon, the rear trailing arms are the same, now all thats left it a place to weld the rear diff.

No problem, pull out the gas tank, do some planning, reinforce the rear end, make a custom gas tank, re route the exhaust and youre done.

It sounds easier to do then it really is, but you guys remember the AWD CRX that some guy made using CRV components, that thing was sweet.

If I get my hands on a AWD civic wagon at the wreckers i'll be sure to get the components that I need. if not then i'll have to shorten some CRV trailing arms. and use a CRV Diff.

Now for the main driveshaft, that could be a problem, maybe i'd have to custom make one.

Re:AWD conversions

u'd be better off getting a subbie rear diff those fuckers are bulletproof, can't remember the exact name on them, lots of datsun 510 guys run them with sr20det swaps

Re:AWD conversions

can you do that take the rear end out of like the 90 wagons and bolt them up to the 88-91 civics would it have to be the sedan /4door / hatch let me know i can get a free wagon and what all would be need to do the swap

There are two differnt wagons on has a strait axle and the newer has the trailing arms.

Xgenturbo 01-23-2005 03:41 PM

Re:AWD conversions

Only the one with the trailing arms, the straight axle was never all wheel drive.

Now when I think about it, i'm not sure, never saw under an AWD civic, ne ways i'm thinking the CRV route is better since in the future you can just bolt up the CRV tranny with a B16 turbo. and then you can do the 5 lug conversion.

Can you just ---- off? If you dont like my idea then thats great, but you dont need to post ---- like thoes gay rolling eye smilies.

First you flip because you thought Evosol made a bad traction bar, and its not how you see it. and every time someone posts something that you dont agree with you just make useless posts and you judge people, well up untill now I thought you were a cool guy, but I dunno man.

The idea has been done before anyway, so its not like i'm asking the impossible.

Re:AWD conversions

If you are talking to me, I have an N/A D16, and I'm building an N/A D15.

Its just that I've seen this attempted, talked about, thought about, etc. about 19784864 times. The only one I've seen that worked cost about $17k to make it happen and it went slow. In the 1.5 years I've been at HMT I've seen this thread happen probably more then once a month. It is a dumb idea, hondas are not intended to be AWD, and even if you did convert using all oem parts, the honda AWD is a piece of ---- and will not yeild the results you are expecting. you are not going to have a honda version of a wrx or skyline or whatever you are fantasizing about. the honda AWD system is built so a CRV or Civic wagon can drive in the snow, not so it can rip up corners. Whatever, go ahead and put all that work and money into a car with 80/20 F/R torque bias ratio if you want to, but even if it doesn't break (which it is very likely to with those weak ass components) it will not be nearly as cool as you want it to be.

Re:AWD conversions

you know you could of just posted that to begin with

here i'll show you

"

Someone already did that, and it went slow
"

see its that simple

Exactly, it just an idea, its not like i'm under my car with a laptop and a welder making a post about how i'm converting to AWD.

I was just browsing through some pics on my computer and saw some of the AWD CRX that someone built, and thought it would be a good question to ask, and since 99% of you guys replied thinking it was a good idea then yeah I guess I made a good post.

Weather or not it was brought up before, well I dont know, its just recently I started coming on here alot and whoring up the place, think, I have been signed up here for 2 years and only have 600 posts or so, I didnt check how many times this issue was brought up.

I hate that perception, hondas ARE intended to be fast. maye not american hondas.

It is rediculous that people think hondas are ONLY intended to be grocery getters. Honda is the EPITOME of "sport compact car"

Ignorant isn't the right word. How about apethetic? or at least that was what I was intending. Hey 4thgen, don't think that I am trying to be a dick to you, it just happens that the first two topics we have had conversations about are two subjects that I get heated about pretty easily. I'm not singling you out, I would be just as much of an ------- to somebody else. BTW, if it is any conversation, I like your A-->W setup. :D

Bro, you just have to take consideration that some people dont know what they're talking about, sometimes I dont either, but there is no reason to get all heated about little things that bother you.

Once again, its all good ;)

Oh sorry bro, lol theres the part in there where I said that I never saw under one, I assumed its the same setup as the CRV, but I guess i'm wrong.

Right from an online manual.

The 4WD Civic Wagon is the only Honda Civic model which uses a rear axle. The 1984-87 models use a solid rear axle and the 1988-91 models use an axle housing and halfshafts.

Re:AWD conversions

i gotta go with bamboo, hondas werent ment to do AWD for performance they were ment to be capable in snow and ---- of that nature, and they werent built to hold oodles of torque and horsepower, youd be better off trying to put a motor in the back and having 4wd that way, it would probably be easier cheaper

Go to japan, Everybody thinks of hondas the same way as they do here, ----, reliable ----. Nobody cares about a high VE, everyone wants torque, thats why the nissans, rx7s, and other turbo cars are so popular there.
