is avg free any good? Updated with a few little problems.

My comp came with mcafee security center already on it for a free 90 day trial. I remember everybody telling me that it sucks ass i need to upgrade. i had avg pro on my old comp but it was so fucked up from porn and limewire it couldn't be saved. had to do a system reboot. now i want to take care of my new one, and i have heard some good things about avg pro. best part is the free. are there other really good ones for free out there? i googles free adware but came up with tons of pay sites.

Its OK. anti-virus programs are a bane to any level of system rescources. ditch it and don't get the virus porn in the first place, or let any pop-up clickers on your computer!

then just use housecall.trendmicro.net for the occasional check.

AVG is awesome and as long as you stick with the free version its pretty light as far as resourses go. I dig it, in fact one of the first things i do before a PC leaves my hands is install mozilla and AVG on it.

Just use mozilla. you will see like 89635 time less pop ups anyway. I use nothing for a pop up blocker but SP2 and very rarely do i see ----.

AVG free or Avast, I'm using Avast right now.

Newer Trend Mirco product doesn't work well with old XP, its geared towards Vista.

Install the adblock plus extension for firefox. Then there's not only less pop ups but about half as much ads on sites.

I've read a few things that were pretty convincing that mainline brands, norton, mcafee, etc whitelist certain government agencies. I wouldn't be surprised.

Re: is avg free any good? Updated and need some help.

ok so i installed avg free and pc tools firewall plus. Now im running a scan on avg and its stuck at 28776. Is that finished or is it just stuck? it has been this way for about 12 minutes now and i know someone is probably going to say im too impatient or something. Also with the firewall i installed, it doesn't have an icon in the bottom right corner like all the other programs that are running, does that mean its not running or something? And the last part is, i don't want to completely uninstall mcafee till its expired, but how do i go in and turn it off? I have given it a quick scan through looking for a on/off option but i couldn't find one. If it helps its windows vista home edition. lol well as i speak avg just jumped to 29405 so i guess it was just going slow. Still 0 threats though, so thats good. And i just got a message from pc firewall that it has had an error sending an application to something or other. So im guessing its not running right now.
