Automatic???

Do you think its worth it turbo charging an automatic car?
Civic 96 DX hatch

Re:Automatic???

Yeah you can, its just that automatics are so gay and boring. I would swap in a manual just so the car would be a little bit of fun

Would it be as fast as a turbo charged manual car?
I dont think so..whats your opinion?

No, auto trans rob massive power and plus they are for gay people.

Re:Automatic???

autos don't normally have as much torque, or acceleration power. with a manual you get to decide how long you stay in each gear and usually have more power at the start of each gear. you have the choice to drop into a lower gear to pull on someone too. manual would definitely be much more fun. imo, for what it's worth *shrug*

btw johnny is so fine. i just wanna.... uuuuaaaa yeeeeeaaaah baby

i think a turbo auto honda would be fun for like 10 minuntes, then it would be gay.

The little shifter thing between the seats, it does have a 1 and a 2 in addition to the R, N & D. Use 'em!

Re:Automatic???

I guess although it might be unpopular to say, I think it would be ------- rad.
1. Autos DO have more wheel torque off the line, the problem is that you make tons of torque and only like 5 horsepower. The real downfall is not being able to control launch rpm as well.
2. Despite the torque converter robbing your hp's, you can spool up before launch. Case in point- 12 second Dodge Diesels are leaving the line near full boost.
3. My favorite argument (especially for huge turbos) is the theory of no blowoff required. Just mash and go and it will shift incredibly fast, accurately, consistently, and you stay spooled. Probably good enough to make up for some of the other power lost. Kinda easier on axles, too, although not as easy to show off and ---- around.
4. Newer autos have more gears which will definitely allow for better performance and ideal ratios than the 3 speed slushboxes we are used to.

I really do believe all of this, I think for straight line racing with turbos, a well set-up auto trans could do at least as well as a good driver in a manual.

Re:Automatic???

I find that people in autos at the strips usually have more consistant run times too. *shrug* Not a whole lot of room for error like there is in a manual.

There was a guy who turbo'd his auto civic just a couple weeks ago, try doing a search, I guess it turned out pretty good for him

Re:Automatic???

Special FX is right though.. I do prefer manual to automatic, but he makes a strong case. And if it already has the automatic tranny... hell, leave it and if/when it goes, swap in a manual if you'd like.

I drive an automatic turbo car and I think its still fun and quick. But I'm still gonna swap in a manual this summer 8)

Re:Automatic???

My car is an auto and I run almost the same times as 5 spds with similair setups.

There are advantages to both but try running times as consistant as mine with a manual. I can run the same time within a hundreth of a second all night long.

I have a 4 spd auto in the sunfire, its electronically controlled so I have the line pressure increased with an Auto-trans interceptor which works quite well. Makes driving more fun since it shifts just like a shift kit in an older car.

Also another good point is that I launch with boost and I dont have to respool after every shift. I feel that time makes up for the drivetrain loss. If you do a rolling stop though at a high speed my gearing hurts me and I'd probably lose.

Regardless turbocharging any vehicle is worth it.

There was a video on line i saw a year ago that had an automatic supra and a manual supra race at the track. And the manual supra killed the auto. But there are some good points in having an auto. I dont think its a fun or as fast as a manual though imo. :-\

Thats why most old people love powerglide autos right?

Who knows what mods those two cars had, it would have to be a similiar setup. Most drag cars are autos and for good reason. If you can make the power and change the stahl speed.... then your doing well.

The only good autos have manual valve bodies.

go for it man, boost is fun and its hard and expensive to convert auto to manual.

Re:Automatic???

For a civic especially, manuals are way better, but try to find a guy at the track running 10 second quarters with a manual. Most if not all full out drag cars have wicked autos in them. But, again, this is a turbo auto civic for the street, get a stick.

exactly. You dont have a drag car that has an auto used for drag racing. So the benifts go towards the stick on this topic.

Re:Automatic???

i wouldn't care if my car was a 11 second civic 5 spd and couldn't get traction.. and the only way i could improve is swapping to auto, ---- AUTO's they are soooo damn boring. my friend thought he wanted an auto.. he had one for 6 months and got a stick cuz he needed to grab gears instead of just flooring it and making your car sound like ass.

auto's with exhaust = sounds like complete ass when shifting...
