So after a terribly long day out at the UW, i had to drive like an hour home because all the roads are messed up because its raining buckets, and everytime rain hits the road every one drives like a douche. So anyway, like I said it was a long day, raining so much i expected to see Noah on his ark, then I finally get home, and there is a god damn school bus parked in front of my house (my neighbor drives it and it pisses me off when he parks it in front of my place) but i figure, ---- at least i'm home. I go to back in my drive way and i start to back up, then i give it a little more gas to get out of the street then the car stops moving, the rpms shoot up, and theres this terrible whining noise. So i just turn the car off and say ---- it, and left it parked across the side walk figuring i'd come back to it later after i get something to eat and cool down. So i come back, and sure enough i dont have reverse anymore, i have forward, but no reverse, it makes a whining noise (like a blower on the new cobras). I ended up getting the car into the driveway, but man am I pissed. I don't really know whats wrong with it, i did some forum hopping and it might be the reaction shell. Anyways the car is a 96 Tahoe with a 4L60E auto tranny. This was supposed to be a help thread, but it just turned into a rant. The trucks got 150,000 miles on it. I was just wondering had ever had their reaction shell replaced, or what it might cost. I think i'm going to go drink a beer....

get a rebuild. the auto ls1's have those trannys and you can get a basic rebuilt pretty cheap. cheaper than a used tranny for sure

If it's 150k on the original tranny, that's pretty good for those. It still sucks that you have no reverse in a big vehicle like that though. Does it slip in drive at all, or is only reverse affected?

Since this happened i only drove it up a slight incline for about 100 ft (i was really creeping it so i didnt take notice if it was slipping) then I put it in neutral so that i could use gravity to coast and get it backed into my driveway. I didnt want to drive it anymore than i had to for fear of hurting it any more than it was already. but if i take i out i'll be sure and let you know whats going on, but that whinning sounds expensive...

I guess it could have been worse, at least it happened at my house...

I've never even heard of a reaction shell?? but 150k in a full size truck aint to bad for a tranny

my buddy just replaced the tranny in his tahoe went out at about the same mileage. but he lost all gears. best bet is to just get a rebuilt.

the worst part is i just put the rig up for sale two days ago...

The truck must have figured it out... and this is its way of getting back at me for trying to get rid of her...

I'm going to pull the tranny out this week and take it in to see what my options are, but in the mean time it looks like i'm stuck bumming rides, or maybe my brothers hatch
