Attn GM guys: need some info for a new project!!!

I scored a deal on a decent s-dime for me to build another mini-truck with when I get back from my work trip. It's a 91 with a 2.8 in it, and other than knowing the cam in that particular 60* motor sucks balls, I can't find any info on what's the max hp it can take before it pops. I've seen a scattered few f-bodied 2.8 turbo setups that the owners are claiming they're making in the low 300's mark reliably, but that's all the info I've gotten so far. I figure why build an s-10 into a mini and swap a sbc into like everyone else does that wants more power, besides...I've already had one. I'd rather stick to boosting the stock 2.8 that's in there. Any ideas other than the cam sucks and c-clips are the devil? I figure a nice large single ching chong turbo might do the trick just fine (---- spending money for a good turbo on a truck I'm going to beat to ---- anyway) for a decent low boost setup, and no one would ever see it coming.

Flush the 2.8

Drop in or build one of the 3.4 OHV engines, GM fixed all the major issues with those models AND you get displacement.

Yeah that seems to be the big winner for the v6 crowd on the s-10 forums...I'll look into it. I honestly don't care if I go through a few 2.8's...they're cheaper than dirt around my home town and thousands of them within a 30 mile radius lol.

Listen to this man, he is very wise.

Get that 700 built though, ive blown a half dozen of those, now my beautiful fully built unit just makes me laugh every time it shifts.

It only took 3 generations to get them right.

;D

You could always go with a 3800 swap. IT would be different and it is probably one of GMs best engines.

There are so many options.

The SBC thinf has been done to death, but I still want to build a gen1 SBC S10.

The problems with the 700R4 are super easy to fix. You just have to know its weaknesses. They are all pretty well documented at this point.

I have a 32v northstar v8 in my 96 cadillac.. Its a monster of an engine, i dont know much about putting it in a RWD application, but that would be the sweetest swap to do IMO.

The 2.8 cant even hold up to the hp it left the factory with. One of mine broke the crank in two and the other started puking oil into the antifreeze, it wasnt overheated or frozen so im still not sure why :S

I think the Northstar is a bit too wide to fit nicely.

Check out www.chrfab.com for some neat parts. They are pricey as ---- though.

Setting it up for RWD really isn't that bad. Just have to get a 60° bellhousing or auto transmission and do a few relatively simple mods. I hope you know some one that can weld Aluminum though.

I was really contemplating shoving one in my old turd gen Camaro. I never got around to it. I still have the hellhousing and 1997 Y code Northstar sitting in storage though.

do smothing differend
run an l67 v6
they put them in the grand prix gtp's
they are supercharged 3800 series 2 engines and make 240hp and 280ft-lbs
these guys http://www.angelfire.com/biz6/stalkerv6/kitcar.html
put them in lotus 7 kit cars so you could probubly get the parts need to bolt up a rwd tranny (stock they are fwd but in the kit cars they are 90* sideways and bolted to a tranny)
also they are endlessly upgradable (fastest in a gtp was 9.001 in the 1/4) and they make low end torque like a small block

but they also put the 2.8's and 3400's in those cars if you look arround
and from what i have seen with a carb conversion, cam, head work and headers/exhaust work they are good for about 200-230crank hp
but i don't know how true that is
but the 3400's are good for like 230crank hp with a cam and exhaus ect

or just a na l32 3800v6 they are rated for 205hp and 230ft-lbs stock and come in older camaro's so they would be pretty cheap and already good for rwd
and with just rockers(or cam),tune,tb,exhaust, and valve springs they are good for 6300-6500rpm and about 260crank hp and 300-310ft-lbs
tho the 3.4 turbo is a forced to be reconed with

her is a 3.4 firebird running 5psi and making 290whp and 370+wft-lbs

Re: Attn GM guys: need some info for a new project!!!

Don't waste time or money on a 2.8. You could put a half dead 100k 350 i it and be faster for cheaper and last longer. A 3.8 would be decent or a later 4.3.

Worst advice, do more work and spend more money for less power.

Thank you sir. I was about to say the same since he ignored my other requests.

To the OP. I was gonna say go with a 3800 but why not a 4.3 came facotry so parts and blocks and all that should be a dime a dozen.

4.3 have horrible oil starvation problems because the crank is designed fucked up.

Re: Attn GM guys: need some info for a new project!!!

3800's aren't bad. L32's are boosted too but have that throttle by wire b/s and are probably pretty pricey.

The L36 can be had anywhere. Rated 205hp/230tq from the factory.

They are a bitch to work on in fwd trim. Just can't get over the fact that gm put those engines in fwd platforms. L36's have a problem with the upper intake manifold, if you go with one of those, be sure to replace that and the egr tube. You can get the whole kit for $200 and it includes new injector seals. You'll probably need a coolant elbow as well. Those are like $5 from advanced, $10 from the stealership. They are a BITCH to install and remove.

Other than that, the l36 is pretty straight and can be found pretty cheap.

Uh, yeah, Just an FYI, getting a FWD 3800 to work in a RWD chassis isn't going to work too well without a RWD intake manifold...

Re: Attn GM guys: need some info for a new project!!!

Thanks for the info guys. As to the sbc comments, like I said earlier...I've already had one. Been there, done that. And for those of you that have never had one you've obviously never heard of header clearance issues or overheating problems that a good 85% of them have. Plus since it's a mini-truck I'm going to do a 4" body drop on it as well, so that cuts down quite a bit on hood clearance and such. The motor that's in it is a 2nd gen 2.8 with really low miles, but that 3.4 swap is looking mighty tasty. Really I want to dump as little money into the engine as possible to get a few extra ponies out of it. The 3800 series is also an option, but might be a little harder getting things to work, especially with swapping harnesses and ecu pieces to get it to run right. I'd rather swap a GN 3.8 turbo in at that point. :P I also have access to quite a few 3.1's, although from what I understand they're pretty much a stroked out 2.8.

Sorry Buk, even though it would be one hell of a respectable swap, cheapness is of the essence here lol.

I'm not looking to make mind shattering power here either, it's a mini truck for ----'s sake...I'd be very happy with a mid 200hp setup with a nice fat torque number to go with it. :D

2JZ-GE are a dime a dozen. Toyota put them in everything, they never break, so the junkyards are full of fucked up vehicles with perfectly good 2JZ that nobody wants because they don't break. Did I mention they don't break?

I've seen complete good GE swaps for $200-350 if you just look.

Interesting...

That gives me a good idea. I do love the sound of a Toyota I6, hell most I6s.

You've known what to do all along. Or how about a Syclone or Typhoon motor swap, although that might be hard to find. Or better yet, how 'bout build a bastard. 2.3T Ford SVO engine. That would be a twist since ppl are now into throwing SBC's into foxbody Mustangs, at least here in the south they are.

JD, is the 4.3 in the GMC turbo trucks a faulty engine as well?

I wish they were a dime a dozen where I live, then I'd seriously look into it. I live in the sort of fucked up area where people don't buy a car/truck/suv unless it's got a ford/chevy/dodge emblem on it. Anything else is considered rare except for auto tranny non-turbo 95-99 eclipses. :P
