Astrovannin's new car.... Turbo 2g Camry anyone?

Ive been looking for one of these Camry's for a while now. Its an auto but thats an easy fix. It also didnt have the "digitronic" dash, which is a bit of a piss off, but Il find one somwhere.

Im currently looking for a complete 3SGTE to make a 5SGTE (2.2L) to put in there. Im planning on using a 3SGTE ECU with a piggyback.

Apearantly these things have most of the chassis in common with the Celica so it should be a simple upgrade to 4 wheel disc and suspention upgrades should be a little more plentiful then they are for my Tercel.

James says his dad will drive it til it dies.. he bought it brand new too haha its in pristine shape too, and its a north carolina car so no rust... I'll have to see if he'd be willing to give it up. His family also has a toyot van, like a 1985 or something haha they love toyotas and never get rid of them.

sounds like to much work for nothing. swap to a v6 then boost ;) 5sfe's go for about as much as the v6'es anyway.

The old rwd Camry's (the real 1Gs) were just 4-door Celicas. It was even called the Celica Camry. Makes sense that they'd keep on making them mechanically similar to them, at least for a while.

I take it this is a FWD?

Waste of time and money. 5s bottom end is worthless and are prone to spin rod bearings without a thermal power monger turbo. 3S ecu is also equally junk, your time and money would be better spent as rawr said, V6 with some boost, Megasquirt is your friend.
BTW the 5vz and 3vz V6's bolt up to all the "S" series transverse transmissions. Fab a couple of engine mounts and your done. 5vz manifolds already point towards what would be the transmissions side and bam youve got plenty of room to make an EASY single piece, inexpensive turbo setup using whatever turbo you choose (hopefully NOT a ct26, 20b, etc.) and tune with a megasquirt. Ford edis with the taurus v6 coil pack makes for a quick and simple MS setup.

it uses the same bunk way of monitoring air as every other toyota ecu.

Point taken.... I was going to use an AFC as well with the idea that I would be able to fine tune it a bit better. But mabey thats not the anwser at all

It will work, but not anything great, and you will always have little issues with sputtering and such past what toyota designed the stock airflow maps to correct to. You might get lucky with a good tune and hit 300hp, but the time/money you waste isnt worth it for a few bucks more MS it and have a nice, safe, reliable tune without the piggyback headaches.

More on the 5vz: In my humble, semi-experienced toyota opinion is in someways a BETTER engine than the mighty 2jz. You start out with more displacement, in an oversquare engine (odd for a truck motor) and cylinder heads that can easily flow more than most v8's. Solid cast iron block, that physically is 4-5" taller than a 3s, and manifold to manifold is 2" shorter and weighs not much more. Beefy rods, stock forged pistons, and a damn nice crank to boot. The only real weak spots in it are its tendency to pop the laughable stock composite headgaskets, and its less than impressive lowend torque biased cams. Metal HG's with arp hardware, and some decent cams are all that is needed to make a high reving, (supposedly 3s springs are close to the right dimensions as an upgrade) smooth torque engine with a powerband most v8's could only wish to have. Add boost as necessary.

I DO like the idea of the V6.... but I JUST picked up a 1991 Celica GT-S for $100, so I got the engine plus all the stuff to convert it to a 5 speed. I was going to use the 5SFE pistons with the 3SGE head, I read somwhere that it would result in 8.5/1 compression, so I thought that would be pretty boost friendly.

Re: Astrovannin's new car.... Turbo 2g Camry anyone?

you could sell the 5s and the corolla tranny and have enough to buy a 3vzfe and megasquirt :6

The static compression means exactly jack ---- in the case of the S series. They arent prone to detonation, the knock limit on proper tune is around 400hp pump which isnt bad at all, but I have serious doubts about the strength and unreliably of the 5S with miles on it. Not only are they prone to spinning rod bearings in anything but the most well kept vehicles, but the last five S cranks ive pulled out (halfcuts and otherwise) had hairline cracks and were as such deemed unacceptable by my machinist, who's opinion I trust.

The S series is dated, and there are much better options for making power to move that heavy chassis, but its your project do as you will. Just dont expect much from it.

Put a 3sgte in it you'll be happy! Just gut the car first. Let me know what you need I got it all here in shop. Celica,mr2, supra, 3sgte, 5sfe, 2jz, 7mgte,etc you name it I got it! Any of the toyota line motors will make power it is how you build them that counts. And Rob is right the 3vz and 5vz are great choices too! We have built a few of them in mr2's and they were fun. Good luck either way you go!

Whats the deal with suspention interchangability?

I was hoping that the suspention and brakes from the 5g Celica would all fit. I figured the brakes for sure but the suspention was just being optimistic. I was thinking of making some shorter struts and using KONI race inserts as well.

I was planning on using 4g Celica GT-S seats, as least on the front, since there a blue/blue one at the local wreckers.

.

Just the rears? I want to try to run supra sized rotors and 4g supra dual piston calipers on the front of my celica. It doesn't look like it would be that much work. You can get the supra calipers for pretty cheep also.

Well, I was thinking of trying to use the 5G Celica brakes all around.
