Anything bad about ebay short throw shifters?

I've had a B&M in the past. I was very happy with it. My friend has a neuspeed and I like that as well. Just wondering who is rocking an ebay shifter and how they like it. I'm wondering if it is worth all the extra money to get a name brand because they are like double the price and I can't see them being that much better. I see that the ebay shifters use bearings and I remember my b&m didn't have bearings. It had silicone bushings or something. Here is an example for $14 shipped. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Honda...16641060QQrdZ1

B&M's are around $45 without shipping and they are one of the cheaper name brands. What are your opinions?

On that note, i personally have watched 2 customers, 2 friends and a few random people brake those. They always just snap in half, or the shift knob threads break right off. The material they use is a lot cheaper then the B&M. If you want it to last, definately go with the B&M

Re: Anything bad about ebay short throw shifters?

This will depend on which one you buy. Just because it is cheap it doesn't mean it is as crappy as the next one, Different makers use different material. Honestly I've had both the name brands and the Ebay ones. The ebay ones definately will feel lighter and the material isn ot as good. Now I have never broke one off.

If you like to abuse your car shifting hard and driving it to hell, it might brake, if you drive aggresive but don't shift as hard as some people, it'll be fine. I've never seen one or heard of one braking in half and not being able to shift. If it happens it would suck. I've heard of them braking at the thread of the knob, the slimest point and you end up with the shift knob in your hand, but you can keep driving.

The last ebay one I installed it's still working good daily driven. I would rather end up buying 2 or 3 of them at $12-$15 a pop, than paying over $100 for a brand name one. But then again I don't keep my cars longer than 2 years.

Re: Anything bad about ebay short throw shifters?

i had a friend who bought one.....and he snapped it just below the threads goin from 2nd to 3rd......my other friend who had one snapped it goin from 1st to 2nd..... so as far as them lasting under aggresive driving i wouldn't buy it....but if you drive your car like ''normal'' people do then you shouldn't have a problem....i have never purchased one but considering the way i drive i will go with the more expensive one...... but thats just my input......let me know if you buy one and how it goes

Dude that how well all of them are, they are short throw shifters, not lower than stock shiftstick. Even the brand name ones will be like this, well most of them anyways. All they do is extend the rod from the ball to where it bolts to your linkage. that's it.

yeah me and this kid got into a fight cuz he told me that even tho mine throws shorter it doesn't make a differance becuz the stick is the same size as stock...but i think it does make a differance. lol

I have had no bad luck with generic short throws. If you shift hard enough to vreak it you are shifting too hard. It doesn't take that much effort to shift your tranny.

seirously, are you guys arm wrestling your shifters? physicaly shifting harder doesnt make your car go faster. i dont even see a diffrence with the short throw shifters. its not like the .0001 time diffrence matters, just keep it stock.

Re: Anything bad about ebay short throw shifters?

I think shortening the gearstick is ugly.
And it does take a serious amount of force to get my transmission from first into second gear quickly. Partly because first is 3.65 and 2nd is 1.95 and the other reason is because the 2nd gear syncros are getting worn.
I have broken the shifter remote once, it is cast iron and I missed third gear. The transmission is equipped with governors that prevent the gears from being selected if the car is going to fast for that gear.

I have a good Non-Generic (Can't Remeber Brand) and bought a 14.00 Ebay one for my buddy's car. The sizes are identical (both integra dual bends shifters in Civics). The Car has seen about 6 months with it in and losts of rammed gears. No breaks.

Re: Anything bad about ebay short throw shifters?

I have had a $16 egay shifter (8 for shifter and 8 for shipping ;D) for about a year and no complaints here. My friend has had an egay one for about 3 years and it finally snapped right where the threads begin. Not bad for less than 20 bucks, but a pain in the ass to drill out and retap the shifter.

Re: Anything bad about ebay short throw shifters?

Jake has broken 2 of them. He also shifts soo hard hes broken shift forks inside the tranny. You be the judge

Re: Anything bad about ebay short throw shifters?

Thanks for the input everyone! I said ---- it and went all out and got the B&M race shifter. I won't miss the extra money a year from now and I'll be happier knowing I bought a quality product and not have to worry about ---- breaking. I'll just waste less money on food and beer for a little to make up the cost difference. 8)

I had the pacesetter adjustable shortshifter. It looks as tall as the stock one but with the ball thing adjusted all the way to the top (shortest setting) It felt really nice/notchy. Its been on the car for 4 years when i bought the car and i had it for 5 years so total of 9 years without any problem. The threaded part snapped right underneth the shift knob a few weeks before i sold the car tho. :1

Alot, $134.95 from summit racing. Its not just the stick though like 99% of the shifters on the market. It also comes with a CNC machined aluminum pivot housing and a spherical bearing which replaces the stock shift lever ball seat, dust seal, and change ball holder.

Have had one in my CRX for over a year now no problems, however after having driven a car with a B & M I would definitely buy the better one if I had to do it again. Just feels smoother and they usually come with new bushings too.
