I just cut my quarter window out with guitar string. My friend the guitar player gave me a 10 gauge, and a 13. Once you poke a knife through and get a hole big enough for the guitar string, just wrap one side around something like a socket or whatever to save your hands. You want to floss that ----, wiht a little pressure, and it'll cut.

i used guitar string and replaced mine.. i guess the perk of living in detroit is cheap ass labor.. a million shops in the area will replace a windshield for 120.. 120 for everything.. labor/windshield..


buy a pack of guitar strings.. and wrap each end arround a pen.. use a screw driver to get into a corner and slide the string through before u wrap it arround a pen.. then just use the string like a saw and as u pull down on it have someone from the inside pull it in.. then u pull out then they pull in while u pull out.. the guitar string is ALOT faster than a windshield tool.. but the windshield tool is reusable..

oh.. u can use a sawzall to start it off too.. theres a speacial thin ass blade with no teeth.. alot easier than a screew driver.. but again.. like the guitar string.. ur only gonna do it once.. so why buy the sawzall blade and the windshield tool?

to go the junkyard. there are usually little shacks that are setup and will install it for like 20-40 bucks. go to one manned by a mexican though cause you white boys like to charge up the ass >:D

where are you located i know a guy who does them for 50 bucks and comes to your house and installs them and takes out the old one also

How is the process for other windows...like hatches and rear? The seals on my rex are dried, shriveled, leaking, and have an enlarged prostate, so I need to replace them.

I would do the rears myself without worrying about it.

My uncle downs an Auto-glass install company. I have never really even wanted to do my own glass work. He uses a lot of chemicals and stuff that the average guy never mentions when they talk about a DIY job. Makes me think there is a reason nobody does auto glass.

Go through your insurance provider if you can, otherwise ask them to swing you a deal. Like you will bring it to their shop and stuf whenever they need it there.

Cool. The rear pieces I think I could do myself. Looks like I would just take out the seals, use the string to cut through the old glue, wire brush the rest off if needed, new glue, pop back in, and pop the seals in. The hatch and windshield are the ones I'm not sure about doing myself.

I'd like to take out all the windows, redo the tint and paint while they're out, and put back in with new seals. If I can find a good deal for someone else to do it, I'll leave it all to the professionals.

pay the money to get it done, that way 6 months from now when its raining in your car you dont have to fork it out then....its best to do it the right way...windshield is more then just a shield, its actually structural so yea get it done right..

oh yea im a bodyman btw, if you wanna do it yourself go to harbor freight and look around i've seen the removal kits there....what our glass guys use is a long flat blade similar to a paint scraper, attached to a reciprocating saw...works wonders...

sounds like to much of a pain in the ass to save a few bucks, and you may have to redo it if it starts to leak. I would jut take it to the pro.

i would go throw insurance, but my car isnt on the road yet, which means i would have to get it inspected.

im in rochester ny.

i may just get it done by someone, i think a local company does it for around $60 removed and installed unless boosted4life knows someone in my area.

i saw the harbor freight window tool the other day, but there wasnt a price sticker so i didnt buy it (they were out of ------- springs compressors too).
