Tremclad in Canada Rustoleum here in the US. It's all rust resistant hard enamel. Don't forget to add flex additive for plastic parts.

Re: Anyone remember the roll on paint? Look inside
Nah, buick just got some fresh paint (atleast on the door haha). If it works out well on my buddies Prelude I might paint her black.
But my friends prelude is ragged and needs some paint lovin', skip is cheap, this is cheap, so it's a perfect match. http://a683.ac-images.myspacecdn.com...8cd4119f02.jpg |
Re: Anyone remember the roll on paint? Look inside
Tremclad/Rustoleum.. 4L of mineral spirits and high density foam rollers.. I mixed it almost half and half
Did this car that way http://www.pitobread.com/media2/car/...ril2%20021.jpg Downside is it took forever, like 4 days applying 2 coats each day to complete, and it takes like an hour or so to do it. so next time I sprayed it using a cheap Princess auto/HF spray gun http://www.pitobread.com/media2/n2co...ture%20006.jpg And it turned out ok aswell and only took me 2 days @ 30 min each to spray the car Expensive paint is for suckers.. If I put the white car into the tires, 20 bux for some white tremclad and a hammer and i'm good to go. I would reccomend spraying it on, just do it in your yard and buy a cheap ass gun. It's way faster. |
Re: Anyone remember the roll on paint? Look inside
Are you saying that spraying the tremclad/rustoleum was every bit as good as using the rollers? You still scuffed between coats, yes?
|
Re: Anyone remember the roll on paint? Look inside
Yes it's 2x as easy, and you can get just as good of a job with half the fuss. The white car is my track bitch and the black car was my DD, I took my time on the black car made sure everything was even etc. With the rollers it takes like 2-3 coats before the paint even begins to "cover" anything, it's laid on really really thin every coat because you thin out the rustoleum to a water like consistency. I did sand on the black car once after 4 coats and I put down 8 coats... It was as smooth as glass and it's a good thing because I couldn't sand it or it would have worn through easily, the paint was too thin. It still needed about 8 more coats to be good enough to wet sand and polish(another 4 days work)
The white car I didn't take as much time with... I also sprayed it without a dryer or a filter on the air line so alot less care was taken. But I can say the paint is 2x as thick with half the work. I laid down a coat, lightly wet sanded it and sprayed it the next day. I plan on final wet sanding it and getting my buddy to compound it to make it shiny. That last pic is just the last coat, no sanding etc so there is some peel, runs and other blemishes that I still have to remove. Spraying it is win. Less work, Less time and same final results.. Use mineral spirits to reduce it same as if you plan on rolling it. Unless of course you like spending like 10 hours painting a car. I have a few more pics of the different stages if you wanna get an idea on both methods. |

that car was done with rustoleum...I would suggest you paint a small section at first to get a feel for it. I found that earlier coats should be thicker and as you add more coats, you should go thinner with each one. That car had 10 or 12 coats on it...i dont remember. I would do one coat, let it flash, then do a second, then sand it. I never did the final sanding/buffing. You need a lot of motivation to do it right. sanding it all off takes for ever. |

Re: Anyone remember the roll on paint? Look inside
I plan on painting both my white trash truck and CRX with a Rustoleum paint.
|
Re: Anyone remember the roll on paint? Look inside
didn't the guy who used the tremclad only roll that ---- on a few times? i thought that's how it turned out so good. well that and the prep work.
|
Re: Anyone remember the roll on paint? Look inside
Yes, you have to roll it on multiple times to get a decent finish
|
Re: Anyone remember the roll on paint? Look inside
so you just sprayed rustoleum, waited for it to partially dry then cleaned it with mineral spirits before another coat
|
Re: Anyone remember the roll on paint? Look inside
Spray/roll it on, let it dry, wetsand lightly to get rid of the bumps and dirt, and then respray/roll
Repeat as necessary. |

cberman: define your usage of "flash" please, not all of us are autobody ninja, thanks. |
Re: Anyone remember the roll on paint? Look inside
Flash is the point where the paint is starting to dry, it's still tacky, but you can spray another coat on top.
Black car after 1 coat, you can see it doesn't cover anything at this stage, just kinda lays down a base http://www.pitobread.com/media2/car/...ar16%20012.jpg http://www.pitobread.com/media2/car/...ch16/mar16.jpg Black car, this was I think 3 coats, you can see on the fender, where the spot putty is still kinda peeking out through the paint.. http://www.pitobread.com/media2/car/...ar18%20001.jpg Last coat, I didn't wetsand after the final coat, and i didn't need to.. it was really smooth cause I took alot of time to do it proper, I just waxed it, it didnt stay shiny kinda had a semi matte finish but i'm sure if i had of followed through, put more paint down and compounded the car it would have been perfect. http://www.pitobread.com/media2/car/...ar20%20001.jpg http://www.pitobread.com/media2/car/...ar21%20001.jpg On to whitey... First spray and wetsanding, the flares were put on after so they aren't painted yet. http://www.pitobread.com/media2/n2co...ture%20003.jpg 2nd and final coat: http://www.pitobread.com/media2/n2co...ture%20015.jpg http://www.pitobread.com/media2/n2co...ture%20031.jpg As you can see there is some peel in the paint in the darker pic, and i havent final wetsanded it yet.. but it was so much faster, and I value time especially on a car that will probably hit more pylons than some sort of pylon hitting machine. More pics if you feel like browsing to see in the car and n2coupe directory..: http://www.pitobread.com/media2/ |
Re: Anyone remember the roll on paint? Look inside
damn is all i got to say. doesnt it take a lot of time to strip every damn part of the car. just the fact that i know i have to put it all back on is what stops me from doing something like that. because taking it apart and bad its the time it takes to put it back on that i dont like.

Re: Anyone remember the roll on paint? Look inside
There are two cases where you go through all that stuff, sales. The first is when you enjoy that sort of work, it's slow and methodical and sort of like meditation. The second is when you feel obligated to what the car is, or should be, to do a good job. It's definitely not for everyone.

Re: Anyone remember the roll on paint? Look inside
I'm still sticking to my paint jobber down the street. Downside to that stuff is it's only a single stage paint with no hardner, and if you ever get any chemical cleaners on it (i.e. brake clean) it will spot it and make it sag or wipe off. Going to paint my car again in a week or so, this time going with white...got quoted $115 for 3 quarts of white base with the reducer and flex agent and 3 quarts of clear with the hardner. Definately alot more than a gallon can of rustoleum, but at least I know I can get this to shine like glass and take a beating.

Re: Anyone remember the roll on paint? Look inside
Here's what I picked up and hopefully will be doing in a month or two -
I got a quart of Rustoleum paint and some mineral spirits. I have my CRX, which I'm going to be doing a bit of rust repair on. Once I repair the rust, I'm going to spot prime, then sand the entire car. Go over it with tack cloth/mineral spirits and a rag. Mix my Paint half/half with mineral spirits and stir really really really well. Pour into HVLP gun, spray first coat. After that coat is on, do a light wet sanding with ??? grit wet. After that's all cleaned up, do another coat. Repeat as necessary? What grit should I do in between, and what should I do after? |
Re: Anyone remember the roll on paint? Look inside
I would do my first wet sanding in between coats lightly with a 400-500ish grit. For the last sand before buffing I would use a 800-1000 Grit. It all depends on how much ---- you got in the paint really, if it's ultra smooth go as fine as you can.
Thats for spraying it on, if you roll it on, and sanded with 400 in between you would probably rub it all off. |
