Your crazy. My sister went down there for work. Armored cars to and from the airport and had to sign a disclosure with the place she was staying. Basically said that if she left, they had no responsibility regarding her life.

You are making it sound worse then what it is. It really depends where you are. The city are really no worse then here in the states, but if you are in the county side, then yea there could be some problems.

Exactly what I was going to say. I know gringos who have lived here over 20 years with no problems.

With all of the security in the cities, including armored cars, millitary people on all of the streets around the capital, the cities are pretty safe. That being said, there are murders here just like in any city, and if you're not smart, sure, it can be you. If you just use the same street smarts as you would in any poor city in the US, you'll be fine here.

There are places in the countryside many Colombians won't go to, but at the same time, much of the countryside around major cities is fine.

I live in the 5th largest city here, Bucaramanga, and it is a VERY safe city. I feel comfortable walking alone down the street at night...something I wouldnt feel comfortable doing in some of the major cities I've visited in the US.

I have been in a armored car to drive around Bogota in once, since my one friend is part of the biggest union in the country, and a UN human rights person, and I must say you do feel quite safe in them. I have also been in taxis and walking down the street with the same person, and all the time I spent with him, we never had a problem. I probably am in a riskier positon than most, but I don't really care. You only live once so why not live a little closer to the unsafe side of things.

Right now that depends on my document for my work VISA getting here from Bogota. I was hired at a colegio in the city, that pays better than any other teaching position in this city and has good benefits, but they need a document from Bogota to get here before I can go apply for my work VISA. If that gets here before my tourist visa runs out, I will be renting an apartment, signing on with the colegio for another year, and will be living here for about two years.

If this doesnt work out how I want it to I'll probably end up going back to PA until I can secure a work VISA and contract from there, and will move back here next August.

I'm hoping I don't have to go back to the states for a while, but we'll see how this work VISA process goes.

Havent found them yet. The one girl I'm friends with here said she has been to them, but I havent remembered to ask her about them as of yet. Hopefully I'll check them out sometime. There is some decent cars here, but most suck pretty bad.

This is the only person that i knew that has went there. So i am uneducated. I'm pretty sure she was out in the middle of nowhere as she went to a sweatshop/plant that her company owns. I mean i'd go there in a heartbeat. Find a little columbian hottie, wife her up and not be a gringo anymore.

My guess is that she was visiting a city or town on the Pacific coast since that is where the cities are the least safe, and that's where there are many clothing shops.

I'm sure there are some safer areas in that side of the country, but the reason it's not safe is that is where much of the leave the country on boats.
