anyone know dsm's?

im looking in to buying a 1998 talon tsi awd on craigslist the guy wants $2900 witch sounds like a good deal being as it's 100% stock minus muffler and spark plug wires (and it's decked out with leather and power everything also has black 17's with 2 extra sets of rims 1 of witch has a set of winter tires on them)

but the only reason im posting this up is they guy says it needs a clutch, and when i asked about it he said it had a brand new clutch within 2500 miles that was correctly broken in but...
here is his exact words "I Think its the throw out bearing, it was in 5th gear and i slowed down at an exit ramp, pulled it out of fifth at the light and when i went to put it in first it wouldnt go into gear. It was a new clutch, only 2500 miles on it, and i broke it in properly, there was obviously some sort of issue when it was installed"

does it sound fishy to you?
i already called vatozone about a throught berring and i would have to buy a clutch kit witch is $290
do you guys think it's the tranny? or is it possible i could get lucky and be somthing stupid like the master cyc needing to be bleed or clutch adjusted???

any helpful answers thanyou in advance

Re: anyone know dsm's?

If it wont go int any gear without grinding, then its probably the throw out bearing release fork broke. My brother-in-laws did it to him. We need more details. Will it go int gear and just not shift without grinding or dose it not go into gear at all? If you just need a new trans you coud get it from tigerjapanese

thats all i know right now
i hope it's just the release fork so i don't have to buy a new clutch, pressure plate, throw out berring and all
tho i would still have to rip it appart to get to the fork but im shure it's cheaper than $300

Re: anyone know dsm's?

i just found an oem replacement clutch release fork
https://www.dsmparts.com/customer/pr...6&bestseller=Y under $60 and the first thing it says is that they are pretty common to break when you have a heavier than stock clutch

i think i may have gotten lucky, but i can only hope

Ahhh....DSMs. Turning ordinary people into mechanics since 1989.

You can usually assume that a $3000 DSM will need $3000 in fixes. good luck. tranny r&r is definately not for a beginner.

Past all that, I love DSMs. my first love of cars. I will own another in the future, but I know how to work on them.

Re: anyone know dsm's?

Well if the fork is broken you should be able to reach up and pull the fork right out of the side of the transmission.

obviously noone in this thread hasnt taken an AWD DSM tranny out. its not actually any harder then taking a honda tranny out, theres just more parts to take off (T-case) but the job itself is very simple. and the tranny isnt really much heavier then a b series tranny.

good chance the release fork broke, happened to my friend. tranny def has to come out. also if there was an aftermarket clutch youre supposed to shim the release fork mount ball. basically you unscrew it and put washers behind it until the fork comes out of the hole in the tranny straight. its hard to explain on the internet. :P

Ive done it 4 times in the last 2 years. You are right about the weight of it. It prob about 20 - 30 lbs heavyer. Its not that hard to pull the trans, but there is alot of vacuum lines and wires under that hood. But if you can pull a honda trans you could pull a awd dsm trans.

thanks
im supposed to be going to look at it soon
i hope it's as nice as it looks in the pics

my personal favorite part of the car is it's all stock other they are pretty hard to find stock (well it's got spark plug wires and a muffler but other than that it's stock)
and it's got 3 sets of rims so i may just be able to sell 1 or 2 sets and get some parts for it for free

All in all the 4G63 is a pretty solid motor. Everything that is attached to it is a ------- pile of ----.

Re: anyone know dsm's?

It's a 98, wich means it has thrust washers, wich means crankwalk is not a big issue like in the early model year 2g's. As far as a tranny job goes, it's ------- cake. A dsm tranny job can be wipped out in an afternoon if you've got a buddy with you. More than likely, the car is a bad master/slave, the release fork is bent/broke (common problem), or the throw out bearing exploded. Some of the ACT clutch kits come with an aftermarket ACT brand throw out bearing that is a plasic piece of crap that I see explode all the time. Worst one I ever saw took out a piece of the tranny case with it. You can buy a new throw out bearing by itself, just call a mitsu dealership. They're not terribly expensive either. Go check the car out, if it's in decent shape pick it up. That's deffinatley a good deal for a 2g

thanks i have been learning up on them (even registered at dsmtalk.com but they have a 7day "lurker" period before you can post or reply so i may just say ---- that site but i don't know)

as for the throw out bearing i figured just to be safe i would get it allong with the fork and maby a master cyc i found them online oem for cheap and the junkyard has a 1997 eclipse that was rearended if there is a drive train problem i can just get parts from the eclipse for cheap i may even buy a tranny to have a spare and the engine out of the one in junk yard so i can build up a 2.3l stroker over the winter nothing crazy just 2.3l stroker, 8.8cr,hx35,264/272cams and some like 720cc injectros should be good for arround 400whp

building a stroker motor for 400WHP is retarded. actually, even opening up a stock DSM motor for 400whp is retarded.

400whp is just a starting point i was thinking about
i don't even know if i will wanna do anything internally but either way i like the idea of getting a second engine just incase i blow this one up even tho the guy says it was rebuilt 50k miles ago

i honostly think a 16g and some boltons and a tune and i'll be happy with 325-350hp
