its a 1971 evinrude two stroke it has points but they dont look fried and i dont see why it would be out of time because last year i drove it all around its starting to piss me off because it starts once and awhile and runs alright then just shuts off

Re: anyone know anything about boats

So it's been sitting for a year? Chances are you have oil clogging all kinds of ---- up. Clean the fuel system. I know you said it's getting gas, but maybe it's getting too much gas.

Re: anyone know anything about boats

check the flywheel key it might have crapped out on ya and that will shoot the whole system
try cleaning the points with some 120 grit sandpaper and check the gapping on them
pull carbs and clean them

Re: anyone know anything about boats

take off the carbs, clean them very good and every little thing .. theres nothing to it really... second johnson/evinrude are very cold natured so give it a lil throttle when trying to start it . when u do get it started adj. the carbs from there

check the magneto out if you have a nice multi and the specs on it?

2 strokes are pretty simple to get running. did you winterize it right last year? fog the ---- out of that bitch? you might just need to change the plugs and get it started on some plugs that arn't fogged out and run all of that fogging oil out.

Re: anyone know anything about boats

Did you check the valve lash and change the oil? The timing belt could be off too! :P

Seriously though...i would bet it is the fuel system.

Re: anyone know anything about boats

check timing,

make sure your not running a hair off,

make sure you have good gas in the tank .. evinrudes are picky picky about fuel/oil mixture and freshness of gas. make sure your plugs are clean. Does this thing have one or 3 carbs ?

my evinrude was a pain in the ass for quite some time. 225 V6.

is it back firing out the carb ? or just pinging really bad ?

i'd throw a new set of points in there any ways..

Nick

old school 2stroke inline6 mercs are where its at. lots of power and light. My pops has a 115hp merc on a 15 foot flatbottom river running boat. Fucker is so fast its scary :o, at wot it only has about the last 2 feet of the boat toutching the water!!!!

Re: anyone know anything about boats

yea im thinking about getting rid of that evinrude...i was thinking about getting a 90 hp motor because iowa dnr's are very strict about over rating your boats. One of my buddies old man put a 150 on a boat similar to mine and was going over 60 it was nuts total redneck though
