Anyone have their own press?

Curious if anyone has their own press? I've been kind of looking at some from Harbor Freight... hand operated pump jack kind of things. I'm trying to justify spending the money on one ($70 to $140) because I spent 2 days driving around town, trying to find someone to press an LCA bushing out and I'd love to be able to press my own.

Not to mention ball joints, wheel bearings, etc...

I just don't know how well they will work. It's $70 for a 6 ton & $140 for 12. 20 ton are $199.

I got a 20 ton at work, I wouldn't get anything smaller then that.

Is it pneumatic? Like, hooked up to a compressor?

We have a press down at my old mans warehouse, works great, I have definately gotten some usage out of it, but it depends on how often you're going to use it, and if the amount of times you'll have a use for it will out weigh the price, maybe you can get someone to go in on it with you . Also have a metal cutting bandsaw I need to set up... but just too lazy

That's what I thought... Local Subaru place quoted me $350 for a wheel bearing replacement (another $100 for the alignment). I also need to do my front LCAs on my beater because they're rotten and loose as a goose. I could stand to do some ball joints on my other car too, not to mention locals who freak out when their LCA bolts break lowering their cars and need to find a press ASAP... LOL

I just hate having to figure out how to have people do stuff for me. It's a bit easier now that I have a beater, but still. I like being able to everything myself. I just didn't know if 6 tons was enough for most small jobs (bushings, ball joints & bearings) or if I need to step it up a little?

I would recommend little machine shops if you dont end up purchasing one, they sometimes will do stuff like that for cheaper, but you are right, if it is near impossible to find someone in the area to do this sort of thing, maybe would should buy it, and charge the locals when they need their stuff done aswell, you'll pay it off faster. I cannot remember off hand what the rating is on my dads press, but i have had no problem when using it with driveline yokes, bushings and all that stuff. I'm heading down to his shop today, i'll get the rating and PM you with it!
