anyone else thing Ford is biting off Honda?

i mean Honda makes a VTEC engine in 89 and then about 10 yars later Ford makes the ZETEC engine. vee-tek and zee-tek
and VTEC stands for something. WTF does ZETEC stand for? "zariable engine technology enside car"
???

ztec is nothing.A friend of mine has a Focus and it means nothing. There is no solenoid,no higher lift, not one thing close to vtec.Im pretty shure "Ecotec" and "vortec" is just the same....a marketing ploy to fool people.

i was at the auto show and a lot of car manf. are stealing the vent style out of the rsx

Toyota also makes VVT-i which is like vtec.
I heard somewhere that the first company to make a system (like vtec) was actually BMW.

Who "successfully" made it? haha.

It's no secret that for years the domestic guys talked trash and laughed at what we're doing. It got big enough to call it a new market, and now thier all trying to jump on the bandwagon. I guess its just business, but I'd rather have import races than "sport compact" ones.
I feel Random coming in about now to throw out some Dodge numbers......lol :D

well the vortec checys are called that because of the swirled intake manifold

Vtec will hopefully turn into what some of the newer cars are using now where the cams dont just spring a lobe to change the profile but how they are electronically controlled by throttle position to give the best power. Now thats the wave of the future.

Re:anyone else thing Ford is biting off Honda?

yeah, there are alot of ___-tec engines out there.
the toyota or mitsubishi engines with variable valve timing are cool, but i have read lancer ads where they are like "Mitsubishi engineers figured out how to increase the engine's performance by using 2, not 1, cam profile." - or something close to that. ---- they just had to take the valve cover off a Honda or Acura VTEC engine and copy that ----.
but i just saw a Ford Focus ad and the announcer says "It has a 'zee-tec' engine" and that is very close to 'vee-tec' so non-car people will remember 'vee-tec' being a good thing and hear 'zee-tec' and think "I gotta get THAT car!"
ha

i believe it was ford that created the first variable valve timing engine, but it flopped and then years later honda did and and was successful with it

zetec is just variable cam timing. it doesn't switch lobes. focus aren't made to be high revving. they dont need to switch lobes, but the cam timing changes help a little.

honda did not invent variable cam timing, or variable lobes. they just made it marketable in a car first.

like hotrex said vortec has nothing to do with variable cam timing.

i think they'd have to do a little more than that

Re:anyone else thing Ford is biting off Honda?

Zetec is the engine family name. This line of engines has been around since the late 70's/early 80's over in Europe. Some Zetec engines have VCT (Variable Cam Timing)which is more of an emissions devise than a performance device as there is no EGR on the VCT equipped engines. VCT is an oil-pressure operated mechanism that allows advancing/retarding on the exhaust cam in my car (Escort ZX2). DOHC, 2.0, 130 hp at the crank from the factory.

But, the Zetec is dying out in favor of the Duratec, so this argument is moot.

Re:anyone else thing Ford is biting off Honda?

zetec engines are variable valve timing in the SVT focus. and yes, with in 2 years the zetec will be no longer and will be replaced by the duratec.

i could be wrong but i thought porsche was one of the first out with variable valve timing. that was in 1986 i think.

well i guess i was wrong and Ford isn't copying Honda.
but i will have to research a little before i completely agree.
