Anybody train Jiu Jitsu?
So i started Jits about a month ago and it's going awesome. I have been grappling for the last few years.. so I thought i'd have an advantage. It's full gi, and its alot different than what I expected. It's alot more challenging for one. I had no idea how ------- easy it is for someone to break your guard just by prying their elbows into the insides of your legs. anyway, i'm a little discouraged because a guy 300lbs (i'm 140) and with 5 years experience worked me over the other night.. and it being the first night my instructor let us roll, I was kind of hoping I could have shown him what I knew. My plan backfired because of the size and strength of this guy and I just got tapped out all night by him.. a guy 205lbs and my instructor. Any of you guys ever get shown up by guys who really knew what they were doing the first time u rolled in Jits class? ALso the gi collar chokes get old as ---- when ur trying to work something and then they just slap that ---- on u out of the blue.

I spent from 9 to 20 boxing weekly. I win fights the old fashion way. Have 3 chipped teeth and my back molar was just pulled from damage from years of fighting.

My instructor is currently in the process of getting Chris Lytle to come down from Indianapolis to do a standup seminar for us, and Jake O'Brien to do a wrestling seminar. |
Re: Anybody train Jiu Jitsu?
Ya I had to stop after some really bad issues with my right arm/hand. Basically my hand wouldnt stop shaking and couldnt even take notes in college. Boxing imo is the purest form of fighting its just loss steam since mayweather bowed out. No real greats in the sport at the moment. All the guys who claim to be boxers in mma make me look good which isnt saying much. My brother really had a shot of doing well in boxing but drug addiction killed it. I only took a knee twice in my whole life boxing he did it both times.
He could of been a great fighter never lost an amauter fight |
Re: Anybody train Jiu Jitsu?
It sucks living where I live. Here in BFE GA there isn't ---- like that around. I would love to get into MMA, boxing or anything.

Re: Anybody train Jiu Jitsu?
Patients , position over submission. Training with big guys helps in the long run. At a point it will come down to who gets tired first and makes a mistake.

Re: Anybody train Jiu Jitsu?
I do jits, no gi though. Some prefer no gi, some prefer with gi. I personally prefer no gi because with a gi so much can be nulified by just grabbing the other guy's gi. In no gi you have to flow more like water. btw I did gi jits in high school a little bit. I kinda wish we had some big guys (250+) in our club so we could work against the big guys.

Re: Anybody train Jiu Jitsu?
I've got my own style. I just throw sand in peoples eyes, stomp their toes, give them a wedgie and then push them over and run the other way. So far I'm 0-0. I'm not a fighter, I'm a lover. 8) Bow chicka wow wow.

Re: Anybody train Jiu Jitsu?
ive always wanted to get into some sort of martial arts again but i just dont really have the time. i started tae kwon do when i was like 8 and got my black belt after a few years ::) and quit when i was like 14 but id like to get into something a bit more serious. mma fighting would be awesome but its hard for guys my size to be competitive (150)
|
Re: Anybody train Jiu Jitsu?
Skill in BJJ goes a lot farther than size. For example there's a blue belt in my club that's like 140lbs. It's harder for me to keep him down than it is for me to keep guys that are my size up to 200lbs and I'm only 175 right now. And these are guys that go to the gym and pump iron and I haven't lifted in 3 or 4 years. Position before submission, as they say, and the smaller skilled guy will definitely give the bigger man (even if the man has skills) a run for his money.

Tae kwon do kids are funny. We were having a neighborhod boxing matches back when I was like 16. The tae kwon do tough guy was getting worked by me and pulled a spinning back fist. He got about 3/4 of the way before I dropped him right on the chin. Guess they didnt teach keep your hands up. |

thats what im saying, i never really thought i was tough or got in fights and ---- i was just into it guess. some real martial arts ---- would be cool

Re: Anybody train Jiu Jitsu?
Its definitely about positioning and playing it smart. You have to wait for the right time to go for a submission too. Much bigger guys have an advantage just in shear mass and strength that is tough to deal with. I used to be able to submit most of the bigger guys in my club because they were a little newer to it and clumsier about things, but I was always hurt afterward. The big guy that instructed the class always beat the hell out of me, but I got stronger and smarter for it every time, and I did get him a few times too. And a lot of bjj is pain tolerance. Don't let them break your guard with just digging in their elbows. It hurts but its not going to actually hurt or damage you in any way. And you're probably giving them too much space if they have time to do that

Re: Anybody train Jiu Jitsu?
Get your guard higher if you hate the elbows. Also, don't count out the small guys. That 140lber I was talking about regularly squirms out from under my side control or if I'm in his half-guard and jumps onto my back.
Thursday was my first practice in 4 months and I nailed the best guy in the class (amateur fighter, been training for years) with 69 position ezekial or darce type choke. I stuffed his shot and gave him the old cattle grab sprawl and he somehow rolled himself onto his back (I guess to avoid the guillotine) and I caught him on it. It was good :y |

Re: Anybody train Jiu Jitsu?
Rubber guard is super easy to get out of. All the guy has to do is stack you up then drive his head into your face, either you let go or he can rip backwards out when you ease up. I'd just stick with a high traditional guard. Scissor sweep is good if you're small or the guy has a small gut, or both. Taller guys have more trouble pulling it off because they need to shrimp more to get the shin across the front. How about getting that high guard then when he tries to sit up go for a flower sweep. Your long arms should help you reach around his shoulder (if you look the sweep up on lockflow or something you'll see what I mean). I love the flower sweep, especially if they try to stack they leave that leg posted waiting on you. Works great on heavy dudes too with minimal effort.

Re: Anybody train Jiu Jitsu?
I love arm chokes... arm triangles, head and arm, 69 monson choke, anaconda, brabo, there are just so many chokes available from half guard, side mount, and 69 or north south it's ridiculous.

Re: Anybody train Jiu Jitsu?
Man... for the record my conditioning sucks. Tonight at practice I rolled with a noob and he manhandled me. Granted he's probably 220-235lbs, lifts regularly, and wrestled in HS and I'm only 170lbs but still, I had nothing for him. I would sprawl but he would brute my leg up to my chest so I was dancing on one leg all hunched over, then he laid on me a bit. I did take his back but I gave it up. The worst part was my stomach hurt because I was breathing so hard. I need to work on that ----. How's your conditioning crxmatt?

Re: Anybody train Jiu Jitsu?
Yeah man I haven't had soda, caffeine, or fast food since the summer. If I can just stop my stomach from cramping up I'll be better. My positions of choice are side control, northsouth, and 69. I'm useless in the mount and with someone in my guard unless they're a total noob. But if I can get some of the better guys in side or 69 I can work for some chokes.
