Shells are cheaper than american hospitals...

Since everyone here is into ghetto why not make one?

Get the rulebook from a racing body and find out what materials they require. Then use a bender to fabricate the hoop and backstays. You can fishmouth the pipes with a holesaw and the plates for the bottom are fairly simple to do. Then weld or get a competent welder to weld it in.

Most of the bolt-in/purchased units I've seen were not worth anything. They frequently divide the main hoop, use a thinner and lighter material and generally build it as a show piece...

It may save your life if and only if there is also a roll hoop. If there is no hoop there is as much or greater chance it will take your life in a rollover.

I am a strong believer of at least a hoop and 2 backstays. This summer when it's warmer out I will have one of these in my GTX.

mine will have a roll bar w/ cross bar and harness bar. and 2 back bars....still deciding where they are going to go.....

either mount threw the rear speakers. or the flat top parts in the very rear of the car.

Re:Any One Have a Roll Cage Or Roll Bar?

The rear stays should weld to a plate on the rear strut. You can also weld a bar in from this point straight across. Depending on the geometry of the car you can usually use this as a tie bar for your shoulder straps. This will add protection for a side impact as well as really stiffen the chassis.

Just pointing out the fact that many people put the cross bar that goes across the B pillars and wear their 4-5 point belts like that. It's all fine and good but if you flip it over at any speed the roof collapses and snaps your neck like a twig. The OEM belt in that situation would allow you to slide sideways.

A roll hoop and a rollbar are one in the same but a crossbar provides no protection against the roof collapsing.

Re:Any One Have a Roll Cage Or Roll Bar?

If it's at the proper angle why did they take exception to that? It's not only permitted but a generally accepted practise in rally.

Here are some pics of the car we ran the year before last in the Ontario Regional series.

http://topnotch.i8.com/DCP_0610.jpg
You can see where the belts anchor...

http://topnotch.i8.com/25voy02.jpg
That would be me hanging on for the ride.

http://topnotch.i8.com/DCP_0603.jpg
The cage was certified a few years back and would not pass current standards as they've added a lot of extra requirements. This was a former ITR racecar but you can see generally how a cage would be laid out.

he told me it would allow the shoulder belts to strecth too much looking at those pics my rear cross bar is further back than yours maybe theres a length limit

Beau

hackish 01-16-2004 12:24 PM

Re:Any One Have a Roll Cage Or Roll Bar?

Come to think of it I think there is a limited length but the actual belt designers do not exceed that length anyway. We have a minimum of 3" wide too so that will affect the stretch.

My instinct says that you probably want a small degree of stretch anyway so it takes up the deacceleration force of the body. Trust me, we rally guys are crazy. Fly down a narrow twisting dirt road with patches of ice and trees brushing each side of the car.

There is a reason why me, the navigator is the only one who knows how fast we're going (no speedo for the driver to get scared). Last Tall Pines we did I think we hit 130km/h. This in an 85hp FWD VW... The open class 4WD 300bhp cars can hit 200 in some spots.

Re:Any One Have a Roll Cage Or Roll Bar?

Beau, the harness' stretch a lot on impact, and that is definitely the reason it won't pass tech attached at the rear bar.

3" web is the current standard, although 2" web is going to be allowed in 2006 SCCA if used with a HANS device.

As for roll bars, like a good simple 4 point, look to Kirk Racing products in Alabama. I have a full weld in 6 point cage from them, and it is very stout.

how heavy are they? heavy enough for me to loos power?

Re:Any One Have a Roll Cage Or Roll Bar?

I've got a 4pt with a harness bar, it's an Autopower bolt in that's been slightly modified, makes me feel way safer though, and definately stiffens the car up. I'm gonna have a custom front section welded in within a couple months though....

Re:Any One Have a Roll Cage Or Roll Bar?

Jhill's cage is really nice. You can see differences between the rules. In rally you must have 3" belts but it is also acceptable to tie in suspension points. You can clearly see in jhill's setup the suspension points are not tied. This would make the car handle far better at high speeds but obviously it's not permitted.

Also, you probably will want to have at least one passenger seat. This is one reason why I suggest going with an FIA rally style cage as it will protect both occupants and tying into the suspension points it will make the car handle better.

sways?? if hes got a beautiful cage like that i'm sure hes got sway bars.

hackish 03-03-2004 11:23 PM

Re:Any One Have a Roll Cage Or Roll Bar?

Look at him in that corner. That's a lot of body roll hurting his cornering. I'd second the upgraded swaybar issue. Depends on the track though. Swaybars and higher spring rates can all be made to do the same basic thing but other variables are usually affected. Suspension tuning is a science and I'm just an amateur.

That cage acts as a giant sway bar. You know how much that cage probably stiffens up that car? The body roll is typical for a "street" car, he's probably doing some serious g's on that turn

I noticed that you have different wheels on both sides of the car. 2 white 2 gunmetal.

if your near seattle my buddy says he is thinkin about making a roll bar setup for a CRX and using my car as the mold. it will be a SCCA cage...so your car wont pass inspection if you bust off a 11.99 or better (i asked already and he knows all the racing rules). if anyone is interested i will get on him about making them...
