I was a ME major at Hofstra Univ. It is a rough program with taking 18 plus credits a semester to graduate in four years. You'll also be a math major or at least a math minor with the ME degree.
I loved it. :1
....but the program was too long for me.

I'm in the process of being an ME. I havent declared it yet, its only my first year, but its a really hard field to go into. I haev a few friends that are ME's and they said it was pretty tough. Over here at UW, you have to have a 3.5 or better in order to declare the major, then you gota just keep that ---- up for the next 2 to 3 years. Nowadays, it takes around 5 years to get the degree, thats if you dont flunk and classes and dont do summer school

I am still in school for ME. I am in my 5th year right now but I only have to take 4 classes this fall and 2 in the spring. Any engineering major is hard to finish in 4 years, especially if you want to have a job (even part-time), a social life, or a hobby as demanding as working on cars. Almost done thankfully, I am hating school right now because I am just burned out of it. I guess going to school for 17 years straight catches up with you. I definitely agree with the fact that you will pretty much be a math major or minor by the time you finish an ME degree. I like it though, its pretty much the only thing I can stand to do (I hate everything else, biology, chemistry, english, etc.) and I was always good at math and physics, which is mainly what ME is, just on a higher level. Whatever you decide, stick with it, it will pay off in the end, trust me. The only thing keeping me going right now is knowing I will be done soon. Seems so close, yet so far away. Good luck,

I'm a 4th year electrical engineering student and i live with two mechanical engineers. I have taken nothing but mechanical classes for my technical electives also. The first two years aren't that bad, junior year is where you pretty much have to ONLY focus on school. ONLY. Senior year has been good so far because we get to study what we are actually interested in. It's definitly been a life changing thing for me, and it teaches you self-discipline. Just know what your getting into for sure. The one thing that i would do differently would be to check out the schools better. Make sure to meet the profs and talk to people that have been through the program. And for future reference, mechanical enginnering at colorado state is excellent, but EE is kinda weak.

5 yrs into mechanical Engineering. Its definately the only thing i could even see myself spending time at school for. It was a little bit challenging, but i never stressed it. One thing that always got me through it all was that everything i learned, i could apply to cars in someway and understand it better. There are many many jobs available after you get a mechanical engineering degree. On a side note, your either one of two people when your in college, the one whos saying "oh you must be really smart" or the one being told that. You usually end up being the second one in everyones eyes. So even if your a dumbass and dont learn ----, you can always flaunt the degree and pretend your smart. In the end, you can always come back to ur roots here at HMT.
Good luck.

i'm thinking about going in to mechanical engineering too. I think I'll probly go to University of Missouri- Rolla for at least a year. I'm thinking about going into the Navy in the Nuclear Engineering Program. I got a 98 on my asvab so they want to recruit me into it. I'm kind of hesitant because of all the stories I hear about people getting screwed by the service and stuff. On the other hand it is a chance to get the hell out of the sticks and see the world. I never really like school cause it never really challenged me enough until this year(my seinor year) and that is only because i am taking 4 college classes and another weighted class so i think i will like the accelerated education in the navy program. Math and Science have always been my strong subjects too so I don't think it will be too hard.
