All the LCD monitors/TVs I've messed with have a single connection going from the controller board to the LCDs mainboard. If it's not plugged in you won't see anything, and there's not enough room to have some and not all of the plug connected. Any case I've seen where only a portion of the screen was messed up, it was because of either a faulty mainboard or the PCB was damaged.

I've never touched a laptop LCD so don't know about those.

The LCDs I've worked with were all LG/Phillips so maybe it just depends on the brand, but never have seen soldering problems. They were all connected like:

LCD
| <- multiple PCBs that aren't removable, if damaged then portion of the screen not displaying, can't be soldered (would melt the PCB)
LCD board
| <- single plug with multiple wires, if unplugged then blank screen
LCD controller

I'd still put my money on a messed up PCB but we won't know til alpawal gets off his *** and tears it down :P
