Any Exp. with Ceramic Coatings.
 

Anybody here tried Ceramic Coating their Piston domes.
Any idea what kinda increase in boost it would allow.

Ive tried ceramic coating on some bike pistons and they dont last very long.
THis time Im trying some stuff from www.techlinecoatings.com

WHat Ive seen is no matter what piston i.e. cast or forged. Coated or not coated. Deto will eat thru anything.

THe cast pistons seem to take temps arround 80-90 deg c higher than the cast before melting.

Looking for similar info for ceramic coatings.
In terms of extra boost we can get away with runing or temps.
THe site dosent say much.

Ive never seen anybody use coatings except on full race engines.

thats because detonation puts a huge load on parts to the point where they can break... coatings wont help much with detonation.

I know it wont help with deto.
But I can give you exact timing and comp numbers you can run on a bike based on the piston your using.
Was hoping somebody could provide data like that for cars on turbo.
I.e. what more boost can we run safelly afer coating.
We want to take it past 20 PSI and are figuring out ways to do it for cheap.
While still not melting the ring lands.

a coating might help to reduce hot spots on the piston (maybe even improve, or reduce heat transfer aswell) which would help prevent detenation.....

it cost me some loot and i haven't actually used them in the engine yet, but i got my forged SRP pistons coated by SwainTech coatings outta New York.
since i got the pistons new at used prices and i used to have some money, i threw down on it.
now i am broke, but my pistons look all pretty sitting in a box.
we'll see how they work on the built b16 turbo engine, when i finish it in 2010. :P

edit: i got the skirts coated with anti-friction coating, which is kinda like the stuff that honda puts on itr/ctr pistons, and the domes got thermal barrier coating.
i can post a pic of my purty pistons later if ya want.

Well I did the coatings today.
We did 12 pistons. 4x for the car and the remaining bike pistongs.
THe car pistons came out the worst. The bike the best.

One thing I know for sure TBCs do work. Just based on the exp. we have had with bikes. Im sure it will help with the car also.

I have no faith on the skirt coatings cause theres no way they will hold up for very long. TBC crown coating is a diffirent ball game all together.
If you mail the Guys at techline tell them chinoy sent you lol Ill get 1$ off my next order just kiding lol. I dont order from them a mate sends me my supplies.

But the techline guys do respond to all my e-mails.
I dont see why it should be costlly. THey are like 40$ a bottle and one bottle does 22 pistons.

They have two lines a retail and a Shop only. My advise stay away from the retail. All the good stuff is in the shop only products.

Its too early for me to say how good Techline will turn out. But Ceramic Coatings on the piston is a Must do. Esp. if your going to run high boost. Its not Gay.
What is gay is going thru all the trouble to put in a turbo and runing 4-6 psi.

Considering you havent even put them in you seem pretty sure.
Ive tried every single skirt coating there is in the market even Platium.

Im sure they work wonders for race cars where pistons get changed after each race. But on street engines I dont know.
