Any air conditioning experts in here?

It's ------- hot out now and my AC sucks ass. :7

Vehicle: 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I put a half can of 134a in it and it did NOTHING. The air is cold, but not as cold as it should be. The compressor stays running and seems to be operating smooth. I was thinking maybe the valve on the heater lines might be leaking hot water into the core which would be causing this, but apparently these Jeeps don't have that valve and hot water is always flowing through the heater core. I checked to see if vent for the recirc/fresh air was working and it is.

What else could it be? ???

umm it's cause your windows are up and you live in the desert. Open then up and get some fresh air and squirt bottle of water. 8) This is HMT so ghetto ftw!

Hahahha hell leather and spring time in wisconsin gave me some leg burnage getting in the galant today. Yowzers. Get one of those ultraviolet leak kits to see where your leaking...cause I'd say mostly likely it is.

Re: Any air conditioning experts in here?

What is your high side and low side pressures?

What is ambient air temp.?

What is output temp. from the vents?

Need those 4 answers before you can go any further.

Must be tested with vehicle at 35 mph for proper airflow over the condensor.

Did you watch the sight glass while adding more R134a?

Did you even check the site glass for bubbles before adding the extra refrigerant?????

While your at it, stick the vacuum line from the motor to the brake booster into a gallon of water. You know what that will do to a motor, you can do the same thing to your AC compressor. It's been 20 years since I took my schooling for HVAC, but the basics are simple with any refirgerant. I don't have the pressure/temp graphs for R-134a, but used to the the charts for R-12 and R-22 by heart.

yea just check if theres any bubbles on the little glass window thingy when you turn on the AC. it gives u basic idea of the freeon level.

Re: Any air conditioning experts in here?

check the flap between the heater and a/c sides of the airbox. if the foam seal is trashed its gonna let hot air into the a/c side.

not technically an acceptable way of checking freon anymore, although it works just fine ;)

does it get cold for a bit and then hot? if it just never gets cold, i wouldnt think that the heater core is the problem, since it takes a bit for the coolant to get warmed up. normally the symptoms are cold air, then about 20mins later, the temp starts rising. although i never rule something out until i know for sure.

is your condenser plugged up? fins all bent to ----? what about the evaporator? rats nest arent uncommon, and cause your a/c to work like ----

It takes a while to get cool....and FOREVER to actually do any good. I would say it is pretty consistant. I'll have to get some actual temp readings. The fins all look decent. Nothing major. Not sure about the evap though.

The coldest it ever got was a butt hair under 50*. When I come to a stop it rises quite a bit, then goes back down slowly. It takes FOREVER to reach these temps. :S I just got one of those guages and it had 45psi in the low side of the system which it says it normal. My AC still sucks. :'(

I "accidentally" leaked some of the 134a out and was watching the air vent temp reading and it actually started to get cooler around ~40psi. Is that my sweet spot? :l

After 45psi it says "DANGER, SEEK PROFESSIONAL HELP!". I was kinda amazed that this can of freon could know something like that so I decided I should stop filling the AC system. :l

iTS BEEN SINCE LAST SUMMER SINCE i HAVE DONE MY ac repairs at the shop but if memeory serves me corectly that jeep still has the expansion valve and they like to ---- up. Get a set of gauges on that bitch and see whats up, its like a compression test for your a/c.

it shouldnt stay running. it has a low and high preasure switch if you dont hit the high preasure switch to tun it off the you dont have enuff preasure in the system

Its old school. When you charge to clear the sight glass, it just means you have a full column of liquid at the metering device.

We always use the superheat and subcooling methods now, its a better way. A lot of people still use the "beer can cold" method on the suction line though.

what is the td of the evaporator?

What is the suction line temperature right before the compressor and the suction pressure?
high side pressure and the liquid line temperature? (liquid line=small line going from the condenser to the metering device next to the evaporator)

Hold the engine to 3000rpm and take the supply temperature from the vents. The cooling capacity goes up as the rpm does.

Re: Any air conditioning experts in here?

18-20 degree drop in air temp across the evap coil is the max. cooling your gonna get.

y7turbo......at least someone else here understands :)

Dr. Boost........

Have you check to make sure the drain line from the evap box is clear? Full of condesate it would effect air flow and cooling. Careful though, in cooler climates I've seen to trapped water turned to ice on old R12 setups.

So you're telling me when it's 120* outside my AC will only be blowing at 100*? :l It was 100* yesterday and I was getting temps of about 50*.

I'll check the drain, but I think I'm pretty much screwed for the summer. :3

isn`t 50* very cold already?

i'd be happy w/ 50* when its 100* outside, then again i have no A/C so anything is nice

Your probably going to be better off bringing it in to have the a/c serviced.

That is where I would look after having the system recharged if it still works like ----

Re: Any air conditioning experts in here?

you know you can have too much refrigerant in the system too, if it is overfilled it fucks with the pressure and it wont work right, it may just need to have some refrigerant evacuated...

That doesn't mean it's 50* inside the car. It would take like 752 hours at that rate to get down to 50* inside the cab. When it's 100+ outside and the sun is shining on you it's not really that cold. I'm going to stick the thermo on my GF's Cavalier and see how cold that one is. I LOVE the AC in her car. :y

in MK2 vw's if its really hot out the vents will smoke from the cold air coming out, r12 FTW

I WANT! :S Too bad they don't make R12 systems anymore. Who needs an ozone layer anyways? :3

Re: Any air conditioning experts in here?

the prices of r12 have actually dropped a bit in the past year because everyone wants to be cheap and switch to r134. the supply is going up and the demand is going down .

once the enviroMENTALists start pushing the use of PURON in autos the same ---- will happen to r134

if freon is heavier than air, how does it make it MILES up in the air and into the ozone? wind my ass...

Re: Any air conditioning experts in here?

If the compressor is constantly running your probebly low on R134. Have the system leak tested if adding some diden't help much.
