Anti-Christian/religion quotes

There are some choice ones out there, here are a few of my favs:

A man's ethical behavior should be based effectually on sympathy, education, and social ties; no religious basis is necessary. Man would indeed be in a poor way if he had to be restrained by fear of punishment and hope of reward after death. ~ Albert Einstein

All religions are cruel, all founded on blood; for all rest principally on the idea of sacrifice-that is, on the perpetual immolation of humanity to the insatiable vengeance of divinity. ~ Mikhail Bakunin

Anyone who can worship a trinity and insist that his religion is a monotheism can believe anything just give him time to rationalize it. Forgive me for being blunt. ~ Robert Heinlein (in Job: A Comedy of Justice)

I am as firmly convinced that religions do harm as I am that they are untrue. ~ Bertrand Russell

I believe that religion, generally speaking, has been a curse to mankind — that its modest and greatly overestimated services on the ethical side have been more than overcome by the damage it has done to clear and honest thinking. ~ H. L. Mencken

I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason, and intellect has intended us to forgo their use. ~ Galileo Galilei

I prefer rationalism to atheism. The question of God and other objects-of-faith are outside reason and play no part in rationalism, thus you don't have to waste your time in either attacking or defending. ~ Isaac Asimov

It may be that today gold has become the exclusive ruler of life, but the time will come when man will again bow down before a higher god. ~ Adolf Hitler

Life in Lubbock, Texas, taught me two things: One is that God loves you and you're going to burn in hell. The other is that sex is the most awful, filthy thing on earth and you should save it for someone you love. ~ Butch Hancock

Man is the religious animal. He is the only religious animal. He is the only animal that has the True Religion -— several of them. He is the only animal that loves his neighbor as himself and cuts his throat, if his theology isn't straight. He has made a graveyard of the globe in trying his honest best to smooth his brother's path to happiness and heaven. ~ Mark Twain

People are divided into two groups -- the righteous and the unrighteous -- and the righteous do the dividing. ~ Lord Cohen

People use the word 'natural'... What is natural to me is these botanical species which interact directly with the nervous system. What I consider artificial is 4 years at Harvard, and the Bible, and Saint Patrick's cathedral, and the sunday school teachings. ~ Timothy Leary, Methods of Control

Religion deserves no more respect than a pile of garbage. ~ H. L. Mencken

Religion is the masterpiece of the art of animal training, for it trains people as to how they shall think. ~ Arthur Schopenhauer

Religion began when the first scoundrel met the first fool. ~ Voltaire

Science can destroy religion by ignoring it as well as by disproving its tenets. No one ever demonstrated, so far as I am aware, the non-existence of Zeus or Thor — but they have few followers now. ~ Arthur C. Clarke

So far as religion of the day is concerned, it is a damned fake... Religion is all bunk. ~ Thomas Edison

The cosmos is a gigantic fly-wheel making 10,000 revolutions a minute. Man is a sick fly taking a dizzy ride on it. Religion is the theory that the wheel was designed and set spinning to give him a ride. ~ H. L. Mencken

We Christians neither want nor worship crosses as the pagans do. ~ Minucius Felix (Christian author, circa 200 A.D.)

We must respect the other fellow's religion, but only in the sense and to the extent that we respect his theory that his wife is beautiful and his children smart. ~ H. L. Mencken

"All thinking men are atheists."
- Ernest Hemingway, American author (1899-1961)

"Religion is a byproduct of fear. For much of human history, it may have been a necessary evil, but why was it more evil than necessary? Isn't killing people in the name of God a pretty good definition of insanity?"
-Arthur C. Clarke, author

"Organized religion is a sham and a crutch for weak-minded people"
- Jesse Ventura

"Lighthouses are more helpful than churches."
-Benjamin Franklin

"You believe in a book that has talking animals, wizards, witches, demons, sticks turning into snakes, food falling from the sky, people walking on water, and all sorts of magical, absurd and primitive stories, and you say that we are the ones that need help?"
-- Dan Barker, Losing Faith in Faith

"Hence today I believe that I am acting in accordance with the will of the Almighty Creator: by defending myself against the Jew, I am fighting for the work of the Lord.."
-Hitler (Mein Kampf, Chapter 2)

I was just referring to the symbolism of the Cross as far as THAT ITSELF being a symbol of Christianity...

BTW why has there been so much religion talk on here lately? :X Just noticed theres been a ton...

eh I believe what I believe, if I'm wrong so be it...

Tom-Guy 12-11-2006 10:11 AM

Re: Anti-Christian/religion quotes

Well, there's only been so much talk because some of the true believer's chains got yanked. Stop being so goddamn sensitive when someone makes a logical observation that religion is retarded and these threads wouldn't happen. Nobody likes an emo godfreak you know. :3

Re: Anti-Christian/religion quotes

well he just said "you believe what you believe and i believe what I believe..one of us will come out on top..." implying that one of them will be right and the other will be wrong...

then he just added "People don't have to be christians to be good." He just stating that all religion is right and will be good im guessing in gods eyes. That there is no right or wrong in any religion. That goes against his previous statement.

Unless he saying you can be good and not be a christian and thats it. But then that goes against the ten commandments...

"I am the LORD your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of slavery. You shall have no other gods before Me..."
This commandment is to believe in the existence of God and His influence on events in the world, and that the goal of the redemption from Egypt was to become His servants (Rashi). It prohibits belief in or worship of any additional deities.
Other religions have more than one god and believe there god is diffirent than christianity god. Other religion has diff beliefs as well. However he just said you can still be good believing in other religion. So will does that cancel out what the first commandents stated? Im good even though i believe in more than one god and have a diff belief then what the bible says? Didn't he said "you shall have no powers above me"

But then how will you explain our government? or president? They don't even allow the word "GOD" anymore without starting a fuss.

There are to be no powers between any human and the Creator, and this includes governments, theologies, sciences, fears, the Pope, saints, any limitation, any vicarious instrument, person or institute out of any motivation whether benevolent or not. Nothing and nothing at all is to be between man and Maker. As Paul writes
so i quess that makes us all wrong now huh? :P

Re: Anti-Christian/religion quotes

I don't have any quotes to add to JD's thread here, but I do have a friend that went to college for theology and all that crap. He graduated with a master's degree, and even though he goes through the routine still, he says he doesn't have faith in it any more just for the simple fact that the things he learned in his 8 years at college pretty much taught him that the bible is full of ---- and most of it can be disproved. He also said that even though it was a college dedicated exclusively to theology and religion (mostly christian and catholic), at the same time they would compare the Koran and other religion's writings against the bible...and it pretty much boiled down to they're all the same basic story. Even the bible as we know it today isn't the whole story, it's just bits and pieces of ancient writings that were compiled by a Roman ceaser (who was a "pagan" btw) using the parts that would make "God" look good so as to gain favor with the rising christianity sects in Rome. Don't believe me? Do a search on it...hell, he was never even baptized until he was on his death bed, just figuring he could cover all his options before he died. :P I could go on and on about this crap...I had to deal with my mom shoving it down my throat 24/7 when I was groing up so I know it backwards and forwards...which makes it all the more fun to disprove and discredit. ;)

Orient yourself to time, place, and situation of the man being quoted. Gallileo and everything he stood for was opposed by the church. Gallileo was a devout christian and tried to introduce his theories - after sitting on them for a number of years so as not to rock the boat - through correct Church channels. Gallileo was tried, and tortured, as a heretic until he recanted cold hard scientific fact. His statement is, by the nature of the man's life and what he endured, the definition of anti-religion.

it is hope that keeps the world in order, without this hope the world would turn into a spiral of death and despair. --FFX

all religion is is hope that when one dies, they have a reward for doing more "good" things in life than "bad", and a consequence for doing more "bad" than "good" no one knows what happens after they die, the only way to find out is die.

we can only speculate......

Almost...

Many religions have a belief that if you believe in their deity (and usually a bundled messenger with him... ie Mohammed and Jesus) you will go to Heaven... others, like Hinduism believe you will be reincarnated again and again until you are just about darned perfect.. like in buddhism how they hope to one day become a buddha, which only a few people have obtained the title of...

More anti church then. If he was a Christian then wasn't he about religion. Religion is being a Christian despite being tortured by a ridiculous church of the time. The topic title is Anti-Christian/religion quotes, which this is not. I was just saying. I'm glad you know your history though, that makes me feel better. :)

Religion is a social construct, with the Church being an established formal construct. Pot, kettle, black.

I beleive that if there is truly a heaven and a god, that as long as you are a good person, you will have your spot in heaven. I dont live my life for this goal or anything. I just have good morals and such...

And I also beleive the bible is a bunch of BS. Just a bunch of stories created to entertain a "people", which evolved into a story to control a population by fear of hell and heresy.

"Religions are all alike - founded upon fables and mythologies."
- thomas jefferson

"During almost fifteen centuries has the legal establishment of Christianity been on trial. What has been its fruits? More or less, in all places, pride and indolence in the clergy; ignorance and servility in the laity; in both, superstition, bigotry, and persecution."
-james madison

"In no instance have . . . the churches been guardians of the liberties of the people."
- james madison

"This would be the best of all possible worlds, if there were no religion in it." [ in a letter to Thomas Jefferson]

"The divinity of Jesus is made a convenient cover for absurdity."

---john adams

Where is our Almighty God?

High above our heads, watching over us?

Or hiding behind the shut eyes and deaf ears of mindless fools?

To assert that the earth revolves around the sun is as erroneous as to claim that Jesus was not born of a virgin."
