well what are you planning on doing with it. there are many different types that range from size, to capability. this is my Husky 3/8 click type, it measures 16in from end to end, its come in handy. from torque'in cams to lug-nuts......... i got it at homedepot for i think around 60 bucks. it treats me well ;D

and whats the acuracy of that??? what makes one wrench better from another?? i have owned husky tool before and wasnt too impressed with them........

im going to be using it for the first time to torque down a head .. ive been thinking about getting the 1/2" drive cause i like the nice solid feel of a beefier drive.....

Harbor freight has some super cheap and they're probably just about as good as anything you'd buy at an Autoparts store. The bonus craftsman has is the lifetime guarantee.. but for $20, you can buy 2 at harbor freight and be just fine ;)

Yeah, I just got a harbor freight catalogue in the mail the other day, they've got hella good deals. I'll definitly be ordering some stuff from them.

IMO, Mac makes the best.

The only thing that sucks with torque wrenches, you gotta keep them calibrated, so be sure to buy from somewhere that will re-calibrate for you later on.

92hatchattack 07-02-2004 07:34 PM

Re:Another tool question .... TORQUE WRENCH?????

how often do you have to calibtrate them???? is it a time thing, or more like after so many uses????

Chacko 07-02-2004 07:58 PM

Re:Another tool question .... TORQUE WRENCH?????

General rule of thumb is every 6 months I think. I imagine it doesn't need to be recalibrated that frequently if you don't use it that much.

I think 6 months as a technician is about the average isn't it?

Someone else better post a follow up on this :)

I have only had my reset once, and I've owned it for almost 2 years now.

NOT TRUE, torque wrenches do not fall under the lifetime warranty of hand tools, read the warranty manual and also ask me how I know....:( Lame ---- man....especially when your 100 dollar wrench breaks because it has a plastic dial and grip.

I would go with a Mac. Just my opinion, not my money though.

Re:Another tool question .... TORQUE WRENCH?????

Craftsman still makes a good torque wrench.

But none of the companeis offer a life time warranty on them.

Simply because torque wrenches will break over time.

Chacko - Kick ass avatar.

But yeah, for the money and quality though, I would go with a Mac!

Re:Another tool question .... TORQUE WRENCH?????

I use the harbor freight 3/8 drive. It works great and I only paid like $15 bux for it.

I've used the craftsman one, and its nice, but I had to treat it like an egg since its so expensive and it wasn't mine.

Just get a $15 one and don't drop it, unless you work at a benz/BMW dealership. The $15 one will also work for Ford techs since everything Ford makes will break before the bolts come out, hehehe ( ford focus owner ).

The quality of their stuff isn't super great, but for the price, it gets the job done. I just got a compression tester for $15 and a timing light for $12 there. The quality of the hose on the compression tester isn't as good as a snap-on one, but then again, the snap-on hose by itself is $60. I bought it to make a leak down tester anyway and it works just fine for that.

i just got a craftsman set for $50 .. a little expensive for a compression tester, but the hoses are beefcake and it came with a bunch of adapter, and replacement parts ... and i case, which is always nice....

as for a leakdown tester, how the hell to you make one??? or, where could u purchase one???

You can buy a leakdown tester at any decent auto tool store or look online. They tend to run about $50-300.. I built mine for about $20 including the $15 compression tester.

Start with your comp tester.. this is my cheapo one

http://mysite.verizon.net/~mattwil/pics/comptester.jpg

Get an air regulator. I got this one at..can ya guess? Harbor freight. It was like $2.99 on sale for ½ price. Add a brass T and some air line fittings (all available at HF for about $5 total. I happened to have these laying around though) the brass piece with the small rubber hose should actually be a male air fitting just like the one on top. I just had that one there to test my homemade mbc and didn't feel like taking it out for the pic ;)

I'm sure you can figure it out, but here is the parts list

air regulator - anything will do really. could just use a valve here too, but it's better to have the guage.
2 male air line fittings
¼ brass T
female air line coupler
teflon tape

http://mysite.verizon.net/~mattwil/pics/diyleakdown.jpg

Here is what it looks like with the compression tester parts connected.

http://mysite.verizon.net/~mattwil/p...kedupdiyld.jpg

voila! ghetto leak down tester..

yeah, i was just hearing from a friend, and he said no matter what wrench i get that after using it to always zero it out or the nubers will get out of wack.... he also said that you should have them calibrated from time to time ....

I don't want to sound like a dick or anything, but in the time it took you to type that question, you could have just checked on their website for yourself.. It's just a more efficient use of time..
