another computer question.
i already have cable from time warner, and at the first of next month im going to get high speed internet. now my problem is i have a desktop and a laptop i want connected. i went to best buy and looked at routers but the people there dint help much. the only thing i learned is i will need a wireless cable modem/ router. do i also need the wireless card for my laptop? if it helps its a brand new gateway m-1617. it does have wireless capability. also i heard you can rent the router from your servicr provider for like 15 a month. any truth to that?

Re: another computer question.
No, you don't need any wireless card for your laptop. Just a wireless router to send the signal, and your laptop's built-in wireless will pick it up.
About renting the router, check your service provider. For $15 a month you'd have to be an idiot to do that instead of just buying one for $50.

Re: another computer question.
your laptop should have an internal wireless card. as for renting the router, call your ISP. although a new router is only like $40, which you would pay more than that in 3 months time.
with a wireless router, there are still ethernet plugins in the back of it, so your desktop can still plug straight to it. you will just have to install the router software and get your WEP protection set up so nobody can leach.
edit: ----, Jago beat me to it

Re: another computer question.
You just need a wireless router. If they charge 15, buy a modem. My ISP only charges $3 a month which is somewhat worth it because if it burns up for whatever reason, or they upgrade the modems, you get another at no charge.
