Aluminum Exhaust
Helo everybody!
Im thinking to make my exhaust system ( from middle of car to back ) include back box with aluminium... Do you think its a gud idea? The idea behind is to lessen weight and some people told me alluminum box sound greater than stainless steel....? Plz give your opinion! Thanx |
By aluminium box do mean muffler? I Think it would be hard to make an aluminium muffler unless your a pro welder. And if not how do you join aluminium piping and a stainless muffler/resonator. Besides that I never seen it done before so why not. I don't think a catback would get too hot for aluminium.

its been done a few times, search honda-tech

my buddy has a 3in ex from downpipe back with no muffler it sounds great and he has no probs he just done vbands
|
|
I say if you have the resources then do it. What's the worst that can happen? You don't like it and you take it oFf?
|
like the guy a few posts above me said if you want to put a standard muffler on then use vbands
|
nice

im sorry i guess i dont see the point in doing it here...
for one i dont think your car makes that much power to warrant spending this much time and money (if your out sourcing the welding which i assume you are) to save a couple pounds if that... i say just stick with stainless its easier and ---- theres so many different cat back systems out there that if you cant find one you like your just plain stupid but thats just my 2 cents |
why not do it . if u have the time and money go nuts .
|
I realize I am play devils advocate here (so don't think I am trying to put your fire out), but here's my pitch for 321 stainless.
18-20 Gauge T321 stainless is your best bet. 1. It will resist corrosion. 2. Readily available bends, mandrel type stuff. 3. Easy to weld in comparison to aluminum unless your a wiz welder 4. The last point is theory, but, where 321 stainless is staying strong in the high temps, aluminum would start to be getting soft right? At least I would think so... Lastly, if your going to do this for realz, let us know how it turns out! |
im not denouncing free thought herer or shunning creativity i just think the time and effort can be better spent on something with some more importance than shaving a couple ounces on an exhaust... which if im not correct was his main reason for using aluminum
if he really wants to save weight theres much easier and practical ways of doing soo agian just my 2 cents |
one of my buddys did it, been a year now works perfect
|
the question is what kind of car would he be doing it for. N/A or turbo. I think thats a little more important because of the exhaust temp difference.
|
also if he wants to do it then let him. as previously stated if he has the resources and time let him go apeshit.
|
I would drill ninja holes in the chassis first. :)
|
it wouldnt save much weight at all

I think they are doing it because it's JDM. |
Aluminum piping sux it doesnt deaden the sound. also the pitch sounds bad not to mention it will bend alot easier my buddy has it i think it's horrible. bringing back the dead on this thread;D
