Default ALTERNATOR NEEDS REPLACEMENT?

I have a greddy turbo timer that also has a volt meter. Normal voltage for me at idle is around 12-13 volts.. and 13-14 driving. Well every now and then all my lights and electricals dim and my voltmeter reads like 6 or 7 volts... even less w/ the ac on. I checked the batery and it has water up to the right level. Does this mean my alternator needs to be replaced? Im not sure if it has ever been replaced or not. Anything i should know about if i do this myself that im not aware of. Im gona follow the haynes repair manual.. so anything else i should do or something im forgetting.. Please shed a litle bit of light ont this for me ... thanks....

Brushes are probably ---- in the alternator.. sounds like its time for a replacement..

Should be 13+ Volts all the time..

Damn, they are expenive pos's too. Im planning on gettin the exact alternator i have now, but what if it somehow gets mistaken as the same one and is for a dif. year or somethin.. am i looking at many problems if i use it to replace it? ALso, could it just be a short somewhere because it only does it w/ all my lights including dome light at idle only. Im guessing it needs replacement, just dont wanna spend 150 bucks and it not solve the problem. Thanks for your help.

I tried searching and came up with nothing, does anyone know where i can get a rebuild kit for my alternator? Is it most likely that the brushings are what needs to be replaced? Please... anyone who knows where i can get a rebuild kit?

Christ, don't get a rebuild kit yourself, just use your core towards a professionally rebuilt alternator, if money is a factor.

Ya, money is the problem. Should most shops accept a trade in?

I went to a alternator and electric motor repair shop.
He tested my alternator on somekind of bench that spins that ---- and reads out the voltage hehehe.
He cracked it open and the only prolem was my bushings..he checked everything replced the bushings tested again ... all good charged me only 23 bucks hehehehe. pretty cheap for me.
My car is running with it for 8 month's now without any problem.
Finally My car runs without electrical or overheating problems for 2 month's now ...
