Alternative car paints?
Hey, i'm finishing up the body work on my 89 Hatch and getting ready to paint it. I decided to get rid of the "ricer" paint job it had before (red mettalic with black flames on the nose) and paint the whole car black. Only problem is i'm really running low on money, and i know how much paint usually costs to do a really decent job. This isn't my first paint job and i've had alot of experience painting both enamels and laquers with and without clear-coats, but i just can't afford to dish out $500-$1000 for good paint this time. I want something that'll last and has a nice shine...but no spray cans either. Besides, most spray can clear coats never completely cure and harden up enough to polish them out. Does anyone know of or used anything other than the "normal" automotive paint to do up their car that goes on smooth and looks really damn good? I know black is a rough color to do because of all the spider-webbing that usually appears after a few times through the car wash, so i need something that hardens up good too.
cliffnotes: need cheap paint must look good must last a while must take abuse Post up fools...i know some of ya's have been in my boat before 8) |

Re: Alternative car paints?
You want cheap good looking paint. Here you go. Transtar clear. 100 for both clear and hardener. PPG black one quart and a pint ~ $100 and get a black sealer $30 so you don't need so much black paint. So all in all mabey 250 bones not to mention the tape, paper and all the other crap that goes along with it. If you want more info message me.

There's no such thing as good looking cheap black or red. Cheap and black= :3

Re: Alternative car paints?
Well, the last paint job i did on the car was the black rattle can flamed into the red, and then clear-coated over with dupont. It looked pretty good when it was buffed out, i just don't want the hassle of the can again though since it's gonna be done to the entire car.

Re: Alternative car paints?
Just bought some paint this morning...i got a 2 stage set...black basecoat and clearcoat overtop...for under $120. Some paint store down the road from me had it, it's called Matrix System and the guy said he'd personally guaranty that the quality is just as good as PPG or DuPont. So hopefully i'll get the car sprayed either this week or next week and post up some shots when it's done ;D

Re: Alternative car paints?
Glasurit...good stuff! I don't think we're allowed to use that stuff in the US anymore 'cause of VOC regulations. Shame i can't read Deutche to see exactly what it is :P

Re: Alternative car paints?
i lke ppg's budget brand its called omni go with a single stage urathane but dupont also makes some called nason it looks good shines nice only disadvantage is you can't color sand it if you don't like the single stage idea i get a gallon of omni base coat black and a gallon of clear for around 300 but the single stage you are looking at a little over 200

Then again no really no such thing as a good looking cheap any color....you can pull off white, but thats about it. |
Re: Alternative car paints?
VOC is volatile organic compound, its the chemical compound in paint and clearcoats etc that cause u to die lol

Re: Alternative car paints?
I think the best people to talk to is your local paint store. Explain what you're looking for and they should be able to help you.
I've been reading up on painting lately and it seems that you either have to do it right the first time, or you can do something like flat black rattle can. But then if you ever go to do it right later, it's gonna suck knowing that the good stuff is only going to stick as well as your rattle can bullshit. It leads me to only one conclusion. :-\ |
Re: Alternative car paints?
Well the stuff i got is supposed to be really damn good...i talked to 4 bodyshops today that use it and they said it's just as good as PPG and DuPont. The Omni line you speak of is usually the Omni AU...it's ok, used it before to paint some friend's cars but overall wasn't too happy with it. My car will be around the 15th car i've painted and i've used many different kinds of paint, so i'm pretty up to par on most of the better quality (read expensive) bc/cc and s.s paints.

http://img228.imageshack.us/img228/3...98fixed7ea.jpg Single stage baby. I sprayed clear on top neway for his car. My car is just single stage no clear. My paint is name brand... sorta. Duplicolor sells gallons of paint at Murrays Auto around my house so I went for it. I remember I posted up whether or not I should do it and everyone was like... BOO ------- hooo It ain't nO tyte ass House of Color or Dupont etc etc... ::) my car: http://img149.imageshack.us/img149/5070/img12881ro.jpg (I dunno why some people rip on SS so much... its actually preferred for black in many cases. I believe Boyd Coddington's shop uses SS black whenever they use black) EDIT: one more (these are recent.. as of yesterday and I painted my car 2 years ago.) http://img122.imageshack.us/img122/7508/img13096rn.jpg |

Last time i paionted my del sol milano red it was $50 for a gallon of paint and a gallon of clear In PPG world series. Last paint job i did was on my DA integra, white with pearl $35 for Omni with the pearl. Guess thats what you get when your dad has a parts store/paint.
